Your take on japanese/visual kei dad rock?

Who/what bands would you consider to be japanese (/visual kei) dad rock? Is “the last rockstars” a good example of japanese dad rock?
When it comes to specifically visual kei, who would you say is the pioneer of visual kei dad rock?

What is your take on this topic?

’ Dad rock ’ sounds like a little joke, that could be more or less funny depending on your sense of humor. But doesn’t really have a meaning. Music can be done any age.

Really curious how one defines ‘dad rock’.

Sure, you have LUNA SEA, L’Arc en Ciel, X Japan etc who’ve been around since the '80s/'90s. But at this point, DEG formed over 25 years ago and even The GazettE has been around for over 20 years. And Gackt may as well be a legacy act.

Plenty of genres have had revivals ('80s revival is huge right now) and aren’t seen as ‘old-people music’ (afaik).

dad rock is like that one thing that was said in court re:pornography once - “I can’t define it, but I know it when I see it.”

I rest my case

I think ‘Dad Rock’ and ‘Butt Rock’ had a same meaning imo. It’s Hard Rock or Pop-Punk with that “Just turn your brain off and let’s go party” lyrics. kind of like later era Nickleback.

Dad rock is fairly relative based on who your dad is. For me it’s always been classic rock and hard rock—stuff you listen to in the garage or while mowing the lawn. So I think of Van Halen, Aerosmith, even Rolling Stones.
Though the other day I saw someone call Arctic Monkeys dad rock and it gave me whiplash because I still haven’t recovered from people considering grunge to be dad rock.

So what Japanese music gives me the same feeling? Fence of Defense, Akina Nakamori’s Stock, X Japan’s singles come to mind.

But my sincere answer? Dadman.

this is imo an objectively correct definition of dad rock

tbf they always kind of were, same with foo fighters

… Bz are dad rock, I guess X Japan but even that’s a stretch

luna sea

there’s an entire world of non-vk yankii dad-rock of the 80s which has very little interest for me personally - i can’t stand the western music of that kind either - but it might be closer to what you’re looking for

but like honestly it’s 2023 stan dazzling bad…

Whenever in doubt, check those YouTube compilation videos that the old folks love to play on their smart tvs =P.

Like it or not, 80s visual kei is officially dad rock now.
So legacy acts such as X, D’erlanger, BUCK-TICK, DEAD END are approved.
What I personally think is considered dad rock is timeless rock music that was very popular during multiple eras and thus stood the test of time.

Doesn’t dad rock implying really safe / classic / generic rock that only dad’s listen to?

In the west I would say that was like the Eagles, Cream, Led Zeppelin…but even those bands are more than 50 years old now.

I’m sure some would say Pearl Jam or Red Hot Chili Peppers are dad rock now.

Heck, bands from the early 2000’s could even be considered dad rock to a teenager now. “Dad’s playing Linkin Park again! Real rock music comes from Tik Tok!”

It’s all relative based on age.

In Japan…I’m really skeptical any Japanese dads listen to visual kei just judging by shots of audiences whether at a big concert or small gig. When you do see older men at a X Japan concert, it is quite possible they were a teenage fan and still like the band now…but the question is are those people even Dad’s considering Japan’s declining birthrates and whatnot? Very few dad’s I know (40+ age group) actually go to concerts anymore - they simply don’t have time or energy to bother see music live even if it’s a band they love.

So I don’t even think the founders of visual kei are listened to by dads over there. if we think of the lyrical content of these songs, most probably don’t resonate with a dad who has been working a full time job for 10-15-20+ years and is just trying to shake off the grind of a 9-to-5 every evening and weekend. Those Dakishimetes / aishiterus / koroshites just won’t connect anymore.

Wait, I thought oyaji-san kei was already a thing? And I remember people referring to Buck-Tick and D’erlanger’s Kyo as such - 15 years ago…

Also I don’t think “Dad-rock” really is a concrete genre. I’ve seen it used to refer to generic old rock bands as well as rock bands (that are simply old). Hell, I’ve seen some people are even calling oldschool Extreme Metal “Dad rock”. I think the only qualifier is that the band is older than 10 years and they play rock, a form of music that most youngsters these days think is pretty antiquated anyway.

Eh, there’s plenty of old Japanese salaryman and men with families that listen to VK. You’ll find most of them on twitter, not TikTok. However most of them def are listening to these bands since their youth and they’re biased towards older VK. Rather than being dads some of them might even be granddads now…

In the 90s at least VK was popular and hyped enough in its home-country to have wider audience appeal and was more beloved across genders (despite the lyrical subject matters) . Now I am no expert on this since I didn’t live in Japan at the time, but from what I’ve heard this changed after the VK boom died down. Then it was mostly young girls and women in their tweens who went to live shows. (which doesn’t mean guys weren’t listening to it.)

What band would you personally call dad rock?

hyde’s solo work

I checked out his last music video and I can see why you find his music dad rock.

What would you say defines a Japanese rock/VK dad rock musician?

there.

Also, angsty and tryhard lyrics (Though, then every vkei will be classified as “dad rock”)

Considering that the audience for VK is mostly female, it’s more mom rock?

The first band that comes to my mind would bei MAN WITH A MISSION and SID though.
