AI in J-Rock and Visual Kei

I had used that server a few times prior to that incident with no issue whatsoever. So you are blatantly lying now and passive aggressively calling me problematic. I think it is quite clear your moderation team has serious issues.

It’s a good thing that there’s so much more to the internet outside of JRO! Go, be free my child!

Indie Artists who have to use AI for promo materials probably aren’t very talented in the first place.

I am all in for artist simply using their logo as cover for their first single. Because everyone should have the chance to start with something simple and go to greater heights visually later. Using AI for album covers just tells me you will never try to work on the presentation of your live work. (And it just also makes it uncommpeling as collector item)

I’m gonna reply here to keep the Dir en grey thread more clean.

People have been copying each other since the dawn the time. But they still gotta put in the work and effort to do it. It’s unoriginal, but it’s the artists work that gets them the end result.

You have a point though. At what point is it referencing another person’s work vs plagiarism? Sometimes the line is unclear and other times it’s blatant. Rotoscoping is a technique many animators use these days to translate realistic movements into animation. Sampling in music could be considered ripping off other artists especially if someone uses the whole song, just adds a beat, and titles it something else. Vaporwave/Futurefunk as an entire genre is that.

I think what makes copying better than using AI for me though is that someone chose a specific source of inspiration that spoke to them. In that way, it’s still personal even if there’s overlap with other artists or content that’s already been created. Doesn’t necessarily make it excusable or good though.

Fellow Canadian. Thanks for reaching out. I appreciate it.

I’m not from jazz, so nobody should take me serious, but i hear from people that if you want to be anything in jazz you have to start out by copying everyone 1:1, Coltrane, Miles Davis, whoever you like, but getting as close as you can to reproducing their works and style - not just one person ofc but many artists

And once you’ve practiced that long enough, your own style comes out in what you like from here and there with some of this and that.

There’s the thought that if you just go at it, zero imitation all just off your head with no purposeful learned influence, your writing will be maximally unique and true to you (i heard this SO much from people who wanted to play metal) but in actuality like 90% of what that creates is hopping from one cliche to the next without the awareness that that’s what’s being done.

So as far as like AI or whatever, i feel a big difference between even the most straight blatant “copying” another artist vs prompting is in the copying scenario, you’re still in a conversation with the copied art as you reproduce it; it’s still becoming mechanically imprinted in your muscle memory (to varying degrees of literal vs figurative depending on media), and there’s some element of purposeful and remembered selection/curation.

Yes, there are no better teachers than the masters. Why do painters study van gough or Rembrandt? It’s to learn and understand techniques.

I think one could argue that AI is just using the same process. And technically, I think it’s true. How does it understand what Rembrandt lighting is? It will study the artist’s paintings. But it’s just processing data and spitting out a result based on an algorithm or query. If someone mostly just cares about the end result, then I don’t think AI seems like such a big deal. But to me, the process is more interesting and important.

Let’s say someone created a painting based on a traumatic event. The piece was a way for them to channel their experience into something more positive. Most likely, there will be people who can relate to the painting and find appreciation for the artist.

Let’s say AI created the exact same painting based on some parameters inputted into a query. It doesn’t hold the same weight. Sure, the final result looks good. But what is the point? Why does it matter? It doesn’t. It’s not a translation of someone’s emotions or experience. There’s no intent behind it. It’s a whatif scenario.

Writing queries does not make one an artist. Everyone has inner thoughts that need to be released and expressed. Leaving that up to AI to do it for you is not only lazy, but disingenuous. AI art is not an extension of yourself and your surroundings at that time. It doesn’t reflect your abilities, connections, restraints, and shortcomings. It’s just a shortcut to giving you a creative high.

Putting the far more pressing issues aside (environment, plagiarism, cognitive decline, etc.), this is actually something that really sticks out to me from day-to-day. The majority of the AI pieces out there are ones that serve a means to an end rather than something manifested/inspired by the imagination.

As diverse as the internet has become, trends still exist. More content tends to coalesce around those trends, which in turn impacts the data AI is trained on, affecting its output, and the cycle continues. It’s a feedback loop. Now tack on the fact that it’s so much more cost-effective to churn slop out than hire an actual artist/designer/etc. (even if the commission is cheap, the time that’s involved gets cut down) and now it’s just slopmania.

It’s not compelling. Yeah, maybe if you’re prompt-maxxing and get some real cool shit going on, congrats, but the problem is that it lives in a sea of slop. It’s hard unsee that, even with the nicest of generated “art”.

I also think having agency over all parts of an artistic process is hugely important, not because every piece has to be unique, but it leaves room for flaws and ingrains discipline, which in themselves are as much part of the art as the product itself.

Oh, and to tie this back into VK to stay on topic… I guess one glaring example of this is the lack of kirakira kei gens that don’t look like K-pop or yassified X Japan (or the Gazette.)

I’ve experienced this. I thought I found a cool artist with a very unique style. They were posting a new “drawing” everyday and I wondered how they could do that. Once I realized they were using AI their “work” lost all value to me.

This 100%.

I mean say what you want to other things regarding AI but parodies is one thing you simply can not do properly trough AI.
the charm is to have people mock others by impersonating them sometimes looking intentionally a lot like them or sometimes being chubby men who take no care about their facial hair. the whole point is to show the hatred or love hatred you have for a group. faking the group of actual members to be losers feels like one step before revenge porn.
it lacks all the charm of an actual parody and reduces it to a threat.

Ok, but seriously…. Would you want to so that with how ferocious VK fans can be online?

I actually think braving the backlash is an importan part of creating parody

tsurugi’s little manifesto on the subject lol I love when VK dudes use their neurons.
I’m the kind who like an opinion to be either black or white ( concerning certain subjects not all ), and Tsurugi is being a biiit gray but at least he’s aknowledging the dark side of AI.
gave my little piece of opinion on his post as wellll

obviously for me a little too hopeful but damn it is honestly satisfying that finally someone is aware of the insane electric usages those AI bots need at least

Tbh it rrads like he is overestimating the “Intelligence” of AI a lot.

Like many people do. It is not intelligent in a sense of a human. It’s just a vrry hood prediction of patterns.

It also sounds like we can’t do anything against the development of a super AI. We always have the option to just not do it as humans. :joy:

yup, that’s what often annoy me when people talk about AI. They consider it like an omniscient intelligence that is equal to humans, meanwhile ( for now ), it only got the power humans gives to it. It’s still clumsy overall.

but not quite sure about this one. People who don’t have a word to say are often the ones who don’t want it lol ( aka us normal people )
as i commented on his lil post, AI only profit to the ultra rich and make them richer, and they’re the ones who have a say ( and the power to execute it ), so obviously they’re gonna go with it until it reaches a point of no return ( aka humans being attacked by androids ( joke ), or more seriously, an unprecedented climate catastrophe. or the end of the world system as we know it. Maybe.
