Omg they finally put it onto Ototoy!
ugh i fucking love this band so much
They can’t keep getting away with it!
Interview about the album is out. I think my favorite tidbits in here are Kenjiro writing a song after watching Ghostbusters on TV, and 8/11 songs for the album being written in the last two months. Also found it interesting how the closer on this album is a throwback to 11’s closer. I think that’s one of the things that makes them such an interesting band to engage with - their catalogue is just loaded with self-reference and reflection.
the album is amazing… but you can tell they just rip off ghostbusters on track 5 XDDDD
Track 5 is already instantly iconic with the Ghostbusters motif followed by the bootlegged Sheila E synthline. To be honest, this is probably the most fun I’ve had listening to a cali-gari album in quite some time, maybe since 13. And this is only after one listen. Everything is just so vibrant and creative, you can really tell they were having fun with it while trying to capture some of that rush of discovering certain bands and sounds in their youth.
It’s amazing to me that apparently most of it was written so quickly (I guess they work well under pressure, haha). For me, this is currently one of their strongest releases since their comeback all those years ago.
You’re getting me excited! I enjoy every cali album, but I agree, nothing has really gripped me in the past couple albums the way 10, 12 or 14 did.
They really do churn out quality music at a record pace though. When did 16 come out? A year ago? That’s pretty impressive. They have some serious creative talent, I don’t think anyone here can deny that.
I can’t get over that melodic little bass solo at the end of Ghostbusters. Kenjiro’s songwriting went through the roof with this release. I’ve always joked that his songwriting in the band is the weakest despite him clearly being the most skilled member, but I’m eating my words now.
Ghostbusters is one hell of a song with The Glamorous Life thing—plus the drums in the outro remind me of Love Like Blood. Not sure if that was intentional, but killing≠joke would rock my world.
Say, what are the drum credits for the album? Did different tracks get different drummers again?
How’s the booklet? Is it worth buying the CD for? I’m debating whether I should get this one later this year along with a future release (which is a big deal for me cuz the last c-g I actually got was the Blue Film -Revival- CD).
Also, I love how we’re just collectively calling track 5 “Ghostbusters” lmao
The booklet is nice! It isn’t too extensive though - there’s only one band pic in the middle, then the lyrics and credits. The packaging itself is beautiful though; the cover really pops in person, and then the back cover and CD are ornate and gorgeous.
If you’re getting another release anyway I say go for it! This CD is relatively cheap too at ¥3k while that particular currency is in the toilet
Wooooow I really am in the minority here. On the first listen the Ghostbusters song pulled me out of it SUPER HARD and distracted me for the rest of the first impression. Upon listening to it again more times since I have found any song I really enjoy a witch is very surprising.
In top of that I really like 15 and 16, much more that 13 and 14 although I enjoy them a lot when I’m in the mood.
I think all of their albums are excellent but so far I think 17 is on the lower part of the tier list when it comes to the post reunion albums (along with 13…)
I might be kind of on the same page as you, but it’s a little early to say definitively. At least in the sense that I didn’t think this album is necessarily a triumphant return from a lower point. My early inclination is that I like 15 and 16 more - but I also really love those albums, so that’s not saying anything negative really. Right now I think what’s giving me this feeling is that it’s a lot more cohesive than their last two? Which sounds like a good thing on its face, but part of me misses the variety of songs on the last two. It feels like there were less fresh ideas on the table here, especially with how much some of these songs remind me of what they were doing with A.B.C.
I’m open to this one growing on me and rising through the ranks! I would probably rank it in the middle/higher end of middle within the context of their post-hiatus releases. If you put a gun to my head right now… fourth from the reunion full lengths? Below 12, 15, and 16, but above 10, 11, 13, and 14. Not in that order, but that’s the general ranking. In the end I like them all so it really doesn’t matter! This is still gonna be the album I listen to the most this year and it won’t even be close. Once you get past the hurdle of entry, it’s good to be a Garist. Even if they release something that isn’t my favorite work, I’ll probably still love the hell out of it and get a lot of value in listening time.
Right now I’m really loving Rondo Rondo, Baka Baka, and the pair of closers. They always have incredible closers and penultimate tracks. Everything else is at least pretty good! It might have some trouble reaching the astronomical highs of 16 (I mean come on, Kuruu Eru Akuta, the Red Dwarf song, Moero yo Moero, Galactic Railroad…classics), but I think as a band they’re sounding very tight and focused. It gives me hope for the future. I still really want to see them live one day! & thankfully it seems like they aren’t running out of steam yet.
It’s Ao’s birthday today! So this was another of their birthday shows.
Baka Baka Baka Baka
Rondo Rondo
Oyasumi Nasai
Seishun Kyousoukyoku
Kenjiro and Ao MC. Shuuji sits quietly, but then starts talking about Rondo later in the MC.
Red Dwarf
Sentimental
Mannequin
Seppuku -Life is Beautiful-
Kusobakagomigero
Baka Baka Baka Baka, again
Shuuji singing the intro vocal line for the outro of Oyasumi was strange, made me think they were gonna play it again. The audience singing the last chorus in Seishun Kyousoukyoku was awesome. I figured this was gonna be one of their shows with a bunch of their goofy fast songs, since that was what they broadcasted live on YT last time - but they actually brought an awesome setlist for this show! The older hits really fleshed the show out, and made it feel substantial despite being a shorter show.
Ah right, it’s Ao’s birthday today. Cool that they streamed this, can’t wait to watch later!
Just returned from both gigs; it was fun! At first I thought they wont be giving out the postcard for the men only live but they did so I got to exchange for 1 of 2 single CDs that are supposed to complete ‘17’. Interestingly, they allowed us to select which CD we want this time so I went for the ‘slow song sounding’ one.
If you buy the 17 album at the gig, it comes with a postcard signed by all 3 members. Eh i don’t collect signatures so I didn’t bothered.
Really interesting decisions on changing enemy placement and overall difficulty balance in 17: Scholar of the First Sin.
