I need a sexy bassline like ‘‘Another one bites the dust’’ and I NEED IT NOAW.
Or Something like ‘‘Wesley’s Theory’’
Just dropping into say BORN’s Kifumi had some unreal basslines omg.
(2:27 - 2:43 of Spiral Lie is just… mwah!)
RAZOR’s Iza has some super slick lines too.
(yesh i am a ryoga fan boi)
The bass work in this song is insane holy. Can’t believe shawty from terrace house wasn’t swooning.
+1 for J of LUNA SEA
Probably the most prolific bassist in the whole scene and one of the key figures in the second wave sound. J’s lines most exclusively drive the song, creating depth, uniqueness and giving them a certain edge. Not to mention that he probably surpassed Sugizo as the member that composed more singles for the band.
(iconic bass line to influence hundreds of bands afterwards)
(perfect balance of groove and a superb melodic line)
(I swear this is the last great LUNA SEA song until Yamibi in 2017)
A man of many talents!
This, exactly. The emphasis on bass is what inspired me to start playing it too. I swear, within vk and a lot of Japanese music in general the bass work is its own art form, even if the bass line isn’t particularly technical or skillful! It could be “average” and it will stick out to me anyway because of an interesting tone, a nice melody or something. I’ve never found this in other music, where the bass is just… there, practically inaudible in the mix, not really doing anything. Post-punk bass lines are similar, sure, but nothing hits the spot like a vk bass line. Or maybe I’m just being a nerd.
I’ll leave this here.
Great song and Shino/Yu-ze is dearly missed…
Given that alice nine is on hiatus/disbanding now, this song still blows my mind (Gemini I, specifically but a lot of saga’s basslines are ridiculously complicated/fast)
Also including sugar because even though it’s pretty repetitive the groove of the bassline just hooks into your brain lol
Not a Japanese bassist, but Mick Karn from the band Japan has played bass on so many Japanese records and was so sought after in the 80s by people like Masami Tsuchiya and Ryuichi Sakamoto, even Sugizo and much more. The way he plays fretless bass on anything is just so unique and cool, I love him.
Some songs where he’s playing bass on:
This song with Bell Nelson, a great guitarist that worked a lot with Japanese musicians. Mick’s bass here is a bit quiet but it absolutely carries this song
And then one more with Japan
Saga absolutely slayeddddd on Gemini, it’s mind blowing.
This song…in one minute bass went from being “just another instrument” to one of my greatest loves. I still get emotional if this song comes up in a live because it changed my life. I literally bought my first bass a week after listening to Codomo for the first time, and the delay was more because I had to research which bass to buy than me hesitating about buying a bass. meN-meN is and will always be my favorite bassist. I can’t link it, but I adore 釈迦’s bassline. It’s so simple but so good. And you can’t be a meN-gya without loving RAD MUSIC!!
Also
First song I ever learned to play on bass so I have a lot of memories attached to it.
Which version you like ?
Kinda late but let me hop on bec Miria from La’Veil MizeriA was honestly my WHOLE WORLD
I’m coming back to this thread cuz yesterday I was jamming some old DIE IN CRIES and man, TAKASHI’s bass is just so tasty in so many songs (sometimes reminds me of Mick Karn a little bit).
Fuck slap bass.
Not necessarily japanese but damn this tone is lethal
YOUR MOVE!
And of course my favorite
Poor ian, I understand his struggles, stuck somewhere lethargic like a fucking tool video
he was left behind contemplating the ‘‘what-ifs’’ I’m thinking what would’ve happened if he was in the band instead of phoenix.
