filler text
Yeah,I didn’t mentioned rabid dog just bc was previously released as single, but it’s a solid track, especially for the emotionally draining lyrics(something about child abuse (?))
I’m feeling pretty bored with this release, as its just tgads with Mako (maco…?) on vocals. Living Dead is fun. New album didn’t wow me like kein’s album did.
The lyrics are much more complex actually and they can be interpreted in a different ways. You can tell they do talk about child’s abuse, but personally I feel like it’s more of a massacre in a playground but not in very literal sense. They talk about many questions regarding the living such as “why I was born” or “what’s the point” or which life is more important than other. It talks about a wish of death of a child but also about reckless decisions (and need of adrenaline) that also leads to death and causes sorrow of the family. It’s interesting also how Mako mentioned seesaw because to me it feels like a metaphor of our lives going up and down but also maybe weighing reasons of living and dying.
I love analysing his lyrics as you can say LMAO
Honestly I believe that deadman in general is the band that one needs to get accustomed to - I was in this phase years ago when I first started listening to it.
At first the new album was such a shock but after a few listens I adore it and I think the songs are great, I can’t even pick a strong favourite because there is something special in every one of them.
Also I think that the time which passed from the previous release was REALLY long so it’s normal to be needing more time with the songs. We were left with old ones for so long so we grew used to it.
Good point… I guess the people need read the book to understand deeply the meaning
As if any true Deadman fan doesn’t already have a Nietzsche tattoo
We still don’t know who portrait man is.
Yes and no, I translated the lyrics so it was better to grasp the understanding. Mako also said in an interview that the lyrics are based more on their current world view so I believe the title of the album only has some general ideas of the real work and it’s more like deadman’s genealogy of mortality
Doesnt matter, he has the base on the book work in few parts. If someone read the book and hear the album (also read the lyrics) can have a greater immersion in your own personal understanding of the album and thats its worth at all.
I dunno if someone already mentioned this but the cover looks kind of like a mirror to me. The listeners blurred reflection when looking at it on a table etc. (which also funnily reminds me of bad mercari listing photos where the sellers face is sort of visible on the cd cover reflection) …Perhaps highlighting that it’s symbolically pointing the question at the listener to ponder their fuzzy origins of morality.
Or maybe I’m reading too much into it
The album is so short that I’ve found myself listening through it ten times already
Btw, just to advertise their fan club little bit: https://www.fansnet.jp/en/deadman
they’ve already posted some live recordings of their new songs there. Most of their posts are video comments (sadly only in Japanese), but one can find a lot of interesting clips in the mix like: Maco doing karaoke, deadman merry go round live covers, other live clips not released anywhere else etc.
Super cool! I’d love to read some more translations (selfish desire ofc, but in case anyone’s in the mood to talk us through the album’s themes/lyrics that’d be awesome!).
For what its worth, it’s been almost 20 years since their last full-length, so i’m expecting it’ll take a few more listens for me to come to a final opinion. I’ll say I was originally unsure about shizukana kuchizuke, but after ~20 or so listens I would also rank it as among their best work. Rabid dog for me is also quo vadis tier brutal and heavy and puts most heavy modern bands to shame.
I actually can share link for my translations if it’s not prohibited here and then we can TALK I am always in the mood to talk about deadman’s lyrics actually
I wouldn’t mind if they took some time and expanded dawn of the dead into a stand-alone single… complete lyrics, five minutes of runtime, a video, the entire package
真夜中の白鳥 is bewitching on every level imaginable, and then some
I like how the beginning of Shizukana Kuchizuke sounds like Animal Crossing.
Feel free to start a deadman translations thread to share your translations so this thread doesnt go off topic. I’m sure you’ll get a lot of discussion! Quite a few deadman stans here.
+1 Do itttt please, I’d love to read some translations!
Done 🫶🏻
Nagoya-kei Kings look so casual here and I love it. It’s cool to see them in what they wear in public
I’m two months late to this, but after receiving my copy and listening to it (and LIVING HELL) all week, I want to leave my two cents.
Overall, I’m not blown away—But—I do love this release, and what it means for the band, being their first album in 19 years.
Opinions on each song, if anyone cares
in the cabinet
I wasn’t expecting this to be anything other than an intro, and it’s a nice, heavy track! It’s great
真夜中の白鳥
This is really nice, but I can’t help but think that aie has used that opening guitar in a TGADS track before. I have issues ‘hearing’ this as a deadman song
rabid dog
Honestly, I loved the single version and it fits in SO WELL here. I want to hear them do more songs like this. I can only imagine how fun it is live!
静かなくちづけ
It’s much more powerful on the disc than the standalone PV. Initially, the PV disappointed me a but, but after hearing it here, I think it has the makings of becoming a deadman classic, like Seija no Koushin or Additional Cause for Sorrow. It’s really quite beautiful
ミツバチ / the dead come walking / 猫とブランケット、寄り添い巡り逢う産声
This is where the album slips for me. Putting three jazzy songs in a row is a recipe for pure boredom imho. Though of the three, Neko to Blanket is my favorite, and a lot better here in the context of the album than on a single. It’s kind of fun actually, but I don’t have much to say about the other two.
零
I love this song. It’s catchy, has an uplifting sound and doesn’t really sound like anything else they’ve done before.
宿主
I don’t have much to say about this song. It’s not particularly bad, but doesn’t stand out to me.
dawn of the dead
I new this would be an outro, but I really wasn’t expecting all the shoegazy distortion. Overall, short, sweet and a nice surprise.
In the end, I think this is a very important release, and I’m enjoying it. Maybe not at the same level of in the direction of sunrise and night light, but then again, that album was a grower for me as well. Hopefully, this is just the beginning of more deadman in our future.
What do you guys think? What are the odds we see another deadman album release again?
