DIR EN GREY announces new album MORTAL DOWNER & tour

downy’s first 5 albums and live album are absolutely essential listening.

Their concert from 2020 is also in-fucking-credible. Ask me about it somewhere.

Not a fan of their 6th album? :o

He also did a remix for 滴る朦朧 on the DUM SPIRO SPERO AT NIPPON BUDOKAN bonus/remix disc in 2014:

Everything after 5 is bizarre. Surreal. It’s not that it’s not good, it’s just very challenging material to listen to. 7 doubly so, because of Yutaka(RIP), and his role in the arrangement of that album. The EP and 8 follow this more sample based/surreal/audioscape based listening format. Once again, it’s not bad, just very much a different offering.

Edit: 6 has like, three of my favorite downy tracks EVER back to back - Umi no Shijima, Shikisai o furu hi, & Shinsetsu na Kyuutai.

Who did the mix on TiW btw? That sucked so bad. Like most of the songs had no weight. Some even didn’t feel like they had any bass at all. If it was mixed by someone I hope they fired that guy.

Happy they got back that nasty heavy bass for Pharalis tho, but oh hell that album was a nightmare.

Dan Lancaster did all the mixing on The Insulated World, and the roster of bands he’s worked with is…uh…

uh

That would explain why I got such 5 Seconds of Summer vibes from The Insulated World.

CRAZY. A good handful of my favorite bands on his production list and TIW sounded how it did. I actually really like that album, but agree the mixing was baaaaad

I don’t care too much for DEG but I’ll check downy out I guess

Huh
I don’t recall anyone complaining about how TWOM sounds

Did he produce that too? Because that did sound great, I love that song a lot

According to that wiki page - yeah. He also mixed Dozing Green acoustic ver.

Dan Lancaster, I’m pretty sure. I think everyone said it. Love that album, but holy hell, my ears.

Am I the only one who in a sense wants them to do something completely surprising? That they go completely nuts with this new album? Or do you prefer the safe Deg? I don’t know if anyone in here cares about Avenged Sevenfold but their latest album, and especially their latest single is like they are completely unrecognizable as a band. Like they really were on acid while writing many songs on the album, like for real.
Do you want another safe Phalaris or something completely silly, surprising and crazy? For example one song is a deathcore song like tsumi to kisei, followed by a chill bossanova pop song. Next one is a silly bright jpop boyband-ish song, etc.

I love when artists dare to try something new. It doesn’t need to suck but do we really want another phalaris?

Honestly something new and wild would be great. Tbh I hope we get a good chunck of Toshiya’s writing. He seemed so motivated about writing music in his latest Interviews and stuff. Hoping we can hear the creativity and inspiration from him on this album.

i actually expect VULGAR or MOAB vol 2.

I would rather something coherent and well thought-out rather than lolsorandom just for the sake of it. Not rehashing the past again would be cool too.

Well that is the point, I am afraid they will just keep going with much of the the kyo psychopath rap that we got a taste of in the devil in me, and just more of the same, probably more mudded/muffled.
