DIR EN GREY to release new single "朧" ("Oboro") in Spring 2021

I really hope so, because the end was so rushed on this promotional edit.

So, Obscure Geisha returned to play as Kyo’s mommy, apparently

Lyrics at the end of Rinkaku are a call back to the opening lyrics in KR Cube. Both are referencing a game that children in Japan play.

Even in 2005 there were people, mainly on LiveJournal, writing dissertations on how Dir en grey were the most artistic, thought-provoking and trvest band of the world, because of how deep their music and Kyo’s lyrics supposedly are. I remember many disputes and ~drama when arguing with such deluded fans, because they got in a frenzy over how the rest of the - in their view -shallow fandom didn’t appreciate Kyo’s enlightened poetry. And how not “getting it” was equal to actually hating the band and insulting Kyo-sama.

The amount of insufferable “iamverysmart” fans has def increased since their pandering to Metalheads, but they have always existed in the fandom. And considering how much the band itself enables it with their “we are making real art” schtick, they aren’t going away.

About the song: it’s not a bad song, but I am personally just not a fan of their ballads. There are a few exceptions, mainly from their pre-MOAB era. I do have to say that it’s much more interesting than any of the slower songs they have made since that era. I feel the violin is a nice touch and the electronic elements add a bit more meat to the song. It’s not bad, just not my taste, I guess.

I think I’d be a little more open about this if it didn’t sound like Ranunculus 1.5. Right down to the atmospheric opening with sparse piano and pulsing electronic bass. Certainly not a bad song by any means but yeah. There really hasn’t been enough time between this and Ranunculus for them to be recycling already.

Can’t forget the quiet isolated vocal parts too!

I gotta say the real strings sound much better than the synth ones in Ranunculus. Hoping the preview cut out forty seconds of outro.

To nobody’s surprise, all the upcoming events have been postponed:

But there’s also whatever this is:

Previews are up on Tower Records! Though I’m sure some of us should be getting our copies today anyway.

Is it just me or are the lyrics from T.D.F.F. rewritten to “American fucker”?

To be fair, I always thought this was the lyric anyway.

Edit: According to degwiki, ‘American’ is never said in either version of the song (it’s ‘Radical Fucker’). Kyo’s pronunciation is just that bad.

I wonder if it’s just my ears or does T.D.F.F. actually sound really weird and muddy next to Oboro?

Ha, so the ending really was rushed and the part that got cut out was in the middle.

TDFF is so dumb, I love it. How did they manage to make it sound more nu-metal in 2021 than a song from 2002?

Lol @ when they turn into crossfaith in the breakdown of T.D.F.F

I noticed this too. I expected them to keep some of the background noises from the original, since Oboro’s got some really nice electronics going on.

T.D.F.F. is meaty. Me gusta.

Having heard the full single, I guess T.D.F.F. isn’t as bad as the preview made it seem. Obviously it’s a bit nutty, but I wouldn’t expect anything less. I get some Mick Gordon vibes from it.

Oboro is decent, but I also have some big issues with it that could keep me from thoroughly enjoying it. The solo doesn’t work for me at all. It feels aimless, random. Almost like they recorded some improvisation and copypasted it in without any further thought. But maybe I just don’t get it. I hope that’s the case, because I love solos and I really don’t like this one. I sort of wish they’d left it out this time around.

Another complaint I have is that lame 2:48 “transition”.

It’s a shame too, because I feel like I could enjoy this almost as much as I enjoy Ranunculus if this got the same amount of polish. The instrumentals and ideas are quite nice in my opinion, but the ending sounds really sloppy to my ears.
