DIR EN GREY to release new single "朧" ("Oboro") in Spring 2021

As an epilogue to Kasumi (lyrics, instrumentation and title all but confirm this), it’s lovely to have in their catalog. The violin and guitar break is something new from them that I find exciting, and they’ve kept the synth sounds tasteful and out of the member’s way. Even Kyo stopped short of overdoing anything which really makes every note count… I like this equally as much as Ochita and TWOM.

T.D.F.F. never stood a chance in my mind. That vocal filter from the Vestige remakes is god awful and every reason to abandon it is in this song.

Keigaku no Yoku was great too and I can’t wait to watch the DVD.

wasn’t super thrilled with T.D.F.F., but honestly that was a song that had nowhere to go but up anyway so no harm done

Did y’'all think I was gonna sit this release out?

IM BACK!!!

Now on to OBORO.
Beautiful song but that section after the second chorus is gonna take a couple of listens to get used to.
Its so oddly placed and hard to follow. What the fuck was Kaoru thinking?

TDFF
I didn’t care for the original at all. But this BANGS. Whatever Die is doing in that chorus adds this eerie vibe to it and I love it. This makes up for the lackluster CLEVER SLEAZOID remake. Its aged poorly since its release.

i really like oboro a lot but the solo seems a little jammed in. i think kyo sounds really beautiful in it and i love the electronics. the last three singles have all been totally up my alley.

tdff is fun but I’ll probably listen to it like two more times in my whole life.

keigaku no yoku is great, i absolutely adore live tracks and i love the atmosphere of that song so no surprise there.

Not a fan of TDFF remake, but glad foocha foocha lives!

The title track, however, is very nice and pretty. I enjoy the instrumentation in it.

So.
Oboro is a nice song overall, liked the addition of another violin&guitar solo that was gutted out in promo… but damn, what the hell is with these abrupt transitions? Couldn’t they smoothen up those parts?
Also, since this song is also written by Kaoru (and he wrote Ranunculus) I just recalled this funny fact about Steven Tyler and imagined how Kaoru, after getting drunk with Joe, decided to write an epic ballad with strings. And when he showed the song to the band they replied “We already have Ranunculus, fuckhead”

T.D.F.F. > Sleazoid 2020, that’s for sure. Even though I like how it sounded in Mode of Kisou, this remake is awesome on it’s own. Always glad to hear Kyo’s bestiality sounds, that breakdown part sounds so fucking sinister (and doesn’t remind me of Devote My Life anymore), and the ending is pure headbanger. I love this one.
And damn, I liked how guitars sound in Keigaku no Yoku o_O Usually I skip their live b-sides, but now I’m curious about the whole bonus dvd footage.

i feel like their decisions behind coming up with most of current remakes and that aerosmoth meme have a lot of similarities creatively & habitually tbh, maybe not the guitar lines but def lyrics

TDFF, much like clever sleazoid, sounds like they recorded it in the depths of kaoru’s ass

Mediocre single, even the remake was a bit bland compared to previous remakes. “TDFF” wasn’t even a good song to begin with and then they decided they just had to re-record it.

I’m still holding out for a death metal remake of Garden.

Oboro could have benefited from being 30 seconds longer just to space out those transitions better. As it is, it still sounds like a promotional edit.

TDFF is fine because it more than likely couldn’t have been any worse than the original. Also who’s bright idea was it to put the hi-hats on the right and the ride cymbal on the left? Who mixed this?

Keigaku no Yoku sounds great. The band is super on point when playing the stuff from Insulated World.

“the last three singles have all been totally up my alley.”

Same. I haven’t been this interested in them since VULGAR/Withering, it’s kind of refreshing really.

I’m still holding out for a decadent art prog yaoimetal remake of Garden (2)

Curious what this entails. Is it metal set to yaoi videos? Is it metal made by gay Japanese men? Or something else?

good question! it is the most evolved genre of art prog metal performed by divine yaoi shonens (in their 40s)(✿●♡∀♡))ヾ☆*。

I take it back. TDFF isn’t fine, it’s awful. I can hear them sitting at a table discussing what old deep cut they can just barely tweak and shit out in 20 minutes so they can slap something else on the single. But it had to be something that no one in particular could care less about either way.

TDFF won out over Audrey.

朧 - I love this song and it is a strong single. The softly sound is so pleasant for my ears I’ve could hear the song in a loop for a whole day. The structure and build up is so good - and the solo is just great. (Even when I’m the only one here, who likes it haha.)

T.D.F.F. - It’s messy, it’s ugly - and I love that! The main riff is still banging and the new elements are giving this classic a fresh vibe. That breakdown tho is awesome.

谿壑の欲 [LIVE] - This song is a beast for live performances and this recording is strong. I just find it kinda odd that they decided to put this one of all on the single as without the cheering in the build-up-parts the song feels a little lifeless.

Overall a very good single and I’m waiting eagerly for the album!
