Seems like Kyo is having ear issues again, but more than a simple infection this time.

Ménière disease, too much liquid inside the ear
I don’t want to jinx, but isn’t that a severely career-hindering disease? I heard that musicians coping with this disease cannot really partake as actively in their musical endeavors as they did before.
It’s definitivly not good news. It’s not curable, just symtoms can be managed…
I guess it depends how severe his case is …
Not live treatning at least.
Man that must be hard for him. I appriciate that he did share his diagnosis this early.
I wonder if the stress of doing 3 active bands at once was a factor here?
"One form of the psychosomatic hypothesis suggests that Meniere’s disease may be provoked by stress. All three major symptoms of Meniere’s disease have been associated with stress in the literature.
The etiology is still unknown, but the disease has a pathologic correlate in hydropic distension of the endolymphatic system" (I think bolded will make a sick title for the next deg album) - per pubmed
somebody running a chiropractic service claims it was curable in their case with cutting down on drinking, salt, smoking and allergens, and managing stress is on their list, but idk how much of value that information is; psychosomatic origin is such a vague excuse that never explains much.
It probably doesnt help. The amount of years these guys have been full time involved in music its hardly surprising that its taking its toll.
I hope he can continue though but fair enough if not. Health must come first!
Kyo will know how to transcend himself, he will not give up whatever his condition. It’s a warrior ! ![]()
This is good general advice for a healthy lifestyle. Although, I’m not sure why anyone would deliberately consume something they’re allergic to…
Understanding of mental health by professionals is pretty much still in the Stone Age. It’s usually completely specific to the individual, and people are complicated. They’re still learning how the brain works and what affects it (e.g. gut flora). So yeah, it’s vague, but there’s not much more that can be said without months (or years) of investigation and therapy.
allergen testing and/or elimination diet are beneficial for less than obvious allergies, or for some instances of chronic inflammation that can’t be traced back to anything outright wrong in the body, so it’s like… valid when used right, but very often a GP would not even bother doing those if there’s a way to medicate the symptoms.
yeah this is all true, it’s just very frustrating, particularly in the context of not so frequently discussed conditions.
apparently, ayumi hamasaki is speculated to have this since ~2008, following an ear infections, and she allegedly lost hearing in her left ear, but she’s not confirming specifics directly.
Anecdotal but i’m allergic to plenty of things like eggs, peaches, apples, carrots etc, but i like them all so i eat small amounts and chase it with a coffee to knock out the inflammation w/ caffeine
So that COULD be a real piece of advice like if people have a threshold of fucking around, maybe don’t
Or maybe it’s a mistranslation or confusion of “inflammation-causers” rather than allergens, cuz stuff like processed meats, refined carbs, and fried foods would definitely fall under that category
it’s still allergens - there’re several less known about ways it can manifest, particularly if it’s a comorbid issue with some other health-related stuff;
as I’ve just learned, an allergic reaction can actually affect hearing as well - not common, but not impossible.
As someone with Ménière’s, I can say that it’s a struggle sometimes, but not impossible to manage. Some experience milder symptoms, while others have it more severely. For me, the main issues are dizziness, especially after prolonged periods of stress, and a sensation of pressure in the ear. I can also say that not all of us lose our hearing quickly.
I hope Kyo has a milder case as well, and that he can get some rest. ![]()

If something will kill me, it will be cheese and pasta… it feels terrible right after, but until it tastes good you can’t stop even if you know it’s not good for you…
I think a lot of people can relate to this…
Nope. I have Meniere desease and it’s not because of liquid in ears
Started noticing tinnitus in my ears about a year ago and reading up on this scared the crap out of me.
Really hope he can find a way to cope with this, and that it doesn’t put an end to their live activities…
As someone who lives with a tinnitus for the past 10+ years I can relate. And this is sad news, I hope he can manage this and keep his career going.
I would like to verify one thing with those that are coping with Ménière’s disease here (more power to all of you for keeping and living on no matter what, I am for real):
Knowing Kyo’s current updates (again, not jinxing): how likely is it that he “may” have to back down and pause his activities? Or is there a slim chance that he can resume but with limited availability?
I have the feeling Kyo is the type of person that won’t back down for anything, even if he is tripping over himself on stage. But it’s really sad to think he’ll be having to deal with extra difficulty in his life.
Hasn’t he had tinnitus since the acoustic trauma incident in his early 20’s also?
