DIR EN GREY

That’s certainly one of their most disjointed looks. Everyone looks like they’re in a different band.

Die must be a fan of Blade Runner

it works in the context of dim PV lighting, I think. it’s also still miles more interesting than the usual suit + big hair / all PVC except for clown frontman looks that most of bands default to for video looks, I miss what they were doing in 2000s.

drain away look is just as messy all over, but I can’t think of anyone else at that time topping the creativity and accessorizing (like, an cafe had this one nailed until they majored, but who else?)
once they reached the final promo photographs and video, it sharply went downhill for an entire decade.

(I was just cringing how much I hate sukekiyo compositions of the past few years bc. the vocals on pretty much every track take me straight to 2002.)

Has it been revealed what Kaoru actually was wearing, and what his message with the look was?

Die looks a bit funny, lower half not too bad, upper half pretty cringe.

Shinya is being shinya, he always wanted to be a girl/wants to.

Kyo probably think he looks stupid af if he sees it today. He has mentioned that he hates his old looks.

Toshiya is neutral, good.

Those FILTH outfits look like the band struck gold at a dominatrix’s estate sale.

The tourism boom is ruining Japan, over half the people in that video are foreign tourists.

It’s awful.

Please don’t use harsh vocals without knowing proper technique. This is a great way to damage your voice permanently.

It goes without saying that one should absolutely never use harsh vocals in a public space. There are few who’d want to hear some idiot yelling (badly), especially amplified by a loud speaker. Most metal-heads are generally respectful of others’ relatively tame tastes in music and wear headphones when listening to it. This guy represents the worst parts of the metal community by playing it out loud where everyone is forced to hear it.

Performing to others without being at least moderately proficient in your craft is almost certain to lead to embarrassment.

Don’t be this guy.

Not true. Heavily touristed areas are the best place to practice. Believe in yourself and sing your heart out.

Excuse the follow-up - the FILTH era promo tour (Souten no Hekireki?) look was more subdued though:

I became a fan just a few months before this, right after ain’t afraid to die was released.

Somehow, Die’s ‘Football Kei’ look became a repressed memory.

My unconscious self must have thrown it straight into my mind bin for all those useless and terrible things that are best forgotten.
