DIR EN GREY

Oh we go back that long? Do you have any “lines” from those songs/lyrics touching the mommy issues?

So to say it easily, he strongly dislikes his mother for giving birth to him?

One more thing I can say, is that it seems to have escalated recently… Oboro standing out as one of the craziest ones yet, maybe ever. Kyo gets born again in the PV…

That picture is so funny in so many ways, a masterpiece.

In Devote My Life he straight up says he regrets being born, but he also apologizes to his parents for the way he is/things he’s said and written.

Thank you for the info, great addition to the question/discussion.

I can tell that you are a true fan remembering a thing like that!

The plot thickens…

Finally something decent.

It’s good to see them finally recognizing the legitimate cover artwork for Gauze.

Apperently there was an article about the “merch the members may not like”. And kyo asks what clowns wrote this. Hilarious :joy:

That’s funny as fuck lmao

This is totally random and somehow I never caught it before, but while I was listening to REPETITION OF HATRED for the Nth time (as one does), I noticed that at the end of the chorus and that one post-chorus bridge part the English phrases Kyo says are the same as some classic old VK song titles.

Embryo burning :arrow_right: DEAD END
Slow Down :arrow_right: Zi:Kill
Move on darkness :arrow_right: Laputa

Just something fun I’ve never seen pointed out before.

That is really cool. I’ve sang that song countless times and never picked that up

I have some thoughts. I didn’t know if I wanted to post it here or in the review thread, but I chose here.

DIR EN GREY is a band that’s gone through a ton of sonic changes in their career as a band. They’ve constantly reinvented themselves from one album to the next and I believe a large part of that is by taking advantage of all the tones a guitar has to offer. What do I mean? Ever since the days of MACABRE, these guys have been experimenting with alternative tunings, amps, and guitar setups to achieve different sounds…but at some point that experimentation stopped and they seem to have settled on Drop D + A.

Let’s examine.

GAUZE - E Standard the whole way through (E A D G B E)
MACABRE - Mostly E Standard, although Hydra is implied to be in D Standard because the song is tabbed in the key of D Minor. (D G C F A D)

Official Score

Kisou - Absolutely all over the place.

  • Kigan, FILTH, Mushi, Jessica, Pink Killer is D Standard.
  • I’ve seen Zomboid tabbed in E Standard but I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s off.
  • Keloid Milk is in C# with some guitar parts tabbed to (G# C# F# C# E G# D) which isn’t anything I recognize, but comes sort of close to the middle of 11-string standard tuning. I think it’s wrong but there’s no official score for this song so I can’t say.
  • Domestic Fucker Family, Karasu is C# Standard (C# F# B E G# C#)
  • undecided is tabbed as E Standard, but wouldn’t be surprised if the guitar is in D and the song is just in the key of E
  • No one tabbed out 24 Cylinders, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s in D as well

Six Ugly -

  • Mr. NEWSMAN is tabbed in Drop C# (C# G# C# F# A# D#) but I wouldn’t be surprised if the tabs are a half step off because everything else is in Drop D (D A D G B E)

VULGAR -

  • audience killer LOOP, THE IIID EMPIRE, INCREASE BLUE, Kasumi, NEW AGE CULTURE, CHILD PREY is in Drop C#
  • Shokubeni, RED…[em], Asunaki Koufuku…, MARMALADE CHAINSAW, R TO THE CORE, DRAIN AWAY, OBSCURE, and AMBER is tabbed as Drop D
  • Sajou no Uta is tabbed as E Standard

Withering to death. -

  • Merciless Cult, C, Saku, Kodoku ni Shisu…, GARBAGE, Machiavellism, dead tree, The Final, Spilled Milk, Kodou are all tabbed out as Drop C#
  • Itoshisa wa Fuhai ni Tsuki and Higeki wa Mabuta wo Oroshita Yasashiki Utsu are tabbed as E Standard, although I’m not sure if that’s just the key and the guitars stay in C#.
  • Beautiful Dirt is tabbed in Drop D, but I have my doubts.
  • Jesus Christ R’ n R is tabbed in D Standard

THE MARROW OF A BONE - Drop C#.

UROBOROS -

  • Ware Yami to te… is tabbed in Eb Standard (D# G# C# F# A# D#)
  • Everything else tabbed as Drop C#

When they switch over to 7-strings is where my point starts coming together.

DUM SPIRO SPERO -

  • Blossoming Beelzebub, Different Sense, Juuyoku, Shitataru Mourou, Lotus, DECAYED CROW, are Drop D + A (A D A D G B E)
  • Amon, Akatsuki, Hageshisa…, Ruten no Tou, and Diabolos tabbed as A# Standard (A# D# G# C# F# A# D#) although I wonder if it’s really Drop D + A
  • There’s a lot going on in Vanitas, but it looks like a mix of Drop D + A, 6-string Drop D, and even E Standard. But I’m gonna have to give it to Drop D + A because Toshiya is in A.

ARCHE - Mostly Drop D + A

  • No one tabbed Magayasou, but I’m gonna assume it’s either Drop D + A or A# Standard.
  • Tabs for Phenomenon assume 6-string, but I’m gonna assume Drop D + A for this as well.
  • Tousei, Kaishun is tabbed as A# Standard

The Insulated World - Drop D + A

  • No one tabbed Keibetsu to Hajimari, but I’m assuming it’s Drop D + A as well

The World of Mercy - No tabs, but I saw them live and they didn’t swap guitars, so I’m going Drop D + A

PHALARIS - Sparsely tabbed, but the songs that do exist are Drop D + A

The Devil in Me - Drop D + A.

See the pattern?

Ever since Dir en grey switched over to 7 string they’ve been almost exclusively locked in A. Specifically Drop D + A, but sometimes when they’re feeling spicy they bust out A# Standard. But since The Insulated World it’s been almost exclusively Drop D + A. They don’t go lower than this with the exception of Warsaw no Gensou, which is tabbed as Drop E in 7-string guitar but I have my suspicions it’s Drop E on 8-strings (E B E A D G B E).

I’m tired of this sound. I personally prefer Drop A on my 7-string (A E A D G B E) and you would think that changing D->E doesn’t make a big sonic difference, but it really does. Drop D + A sounds so muted and more low than heavy, which is why songs like the remade Rasetsukoku and OBSCURE do nothing for me (both in Drop D + A). I get why they run it (allows them to play most of their songs rather easily), but I’m also in the market for a new sound.

I wonder what their resistance is to go lower and into G# territory. Going lower doesn’t necessarily fix everything, but it opens up new chord voicings and opportunities for creativity. They can stay on 7’s and try out Russian Tuning, A Standard, G# Standard, Open C, etc.

Something other than this Drop D + A, please.

For what it’s worth, when the band switched to seven strings and begin using that tuning, they talked a lot about perfecting the balance between having low tuned guitars and still making room for the bass.

It’s possible they feel going any lower than A would dip too far into the bass frequencies and muddy things up in the low end.

It’s already very muddy so I wish they don’t go lower tuning. Their music is more emotional with 6 strings tunings

I don’t know shit about guitar, but it seems like ever since the switch to 7 strings they use the bottom two strings to chug, and the other five to jangle.

  1. Get a job at Japanese Guitar Center
  2. Be sure to get Kaoru as your customer
  3. Convince him to go multiscale (fanned frets)

Jangly / muddy problem solved!

Man, as long as they don’t go to 8 strings.

I know nothing about guitars so I’m just imagining Kaoru coming up with comically large guitars with an increasing number of strings
