How long has everyone been a fan of vkei? Even if you weren't in any communities

A mix of VK being around since the 90s and ageing being something humans rarely get around. So I guess the real answer is: because we’re not dead yet

I discovered VK in 2018 through youtube recommendations. Well, I discovered Unlucky Morpheus, and through them Yousei Teikoku, and then Gazette/Versailles/Dadaroma/D etc. I don’t have friends with such interests, I don’t watch anime and have basically no connection to Japanese pop culture, so it was kind of an accident, but I’m glad it happened. VK is still one of my favorite things in the realm of entertainment.

I do check out older bands occasionally, and some of them are really good, but I prefer to follow more recent ones, especially ones that are active. Just having a new release or something to look forward to is more interesting than digging into an old discography. Also, I personally never understood mentioning Kpop alongside VK. They aren’t comparable IMO, neither musically, nor aesthetically.

We all went to the beach that makes you old. /s

I’m more interested in how all these young folk are here. Do the kids find vk through those tic tac videos now? Those are straight bussin’ fr fr no cap.

I am sorry I forgot to bath in the blood of a virgin to get myself back to 16 years again.

Ok, seriously it depends on what you consider old, I guess.
And also you can notice that quite some of us who are older come from a different generation of internet, less social media like Twitter, more forums like us, you get the idea ( I hope)

While you are getting torn apart for your (correct) observation, the real answer is that visual kei is crack and people that find it don’t often leave. Doubly so when you find it young and it sticks with you. So a lot of us have been together hanging out on these kinds of forums for years, some of us even decades at this point. If you stick around for a while, one day you too will be “old” to new fans, even if you’re only 25.

I took a pause in 2011-2015, but not due to K-pop. I decided to focus more on bands who actually wanted to come to Canada, so that usually meant North American and European bands.

Didn’t get into it specifically because of anime and manga, but in 2000/2001, I would follow websites created by people who liked Anime, manga and JRPGs, and some of them listened to J-rock/VK.

I first heard of vk in 2003 maybe but didn’t get into it before 2007. At that point it was a mix of moots into it + being 13 and edgy probably lol + expanding my tastes, I found artists and bands I liked (and still do - Nightmare, Psycho Le Cemu, Miyavi then Cascade, Ancafe, Pierrot, Kannivalism and MUCC for instance) and the rest is history  I don’t think of myself as a fan of vk any more than jmusic broadly though and ome days or years I’m more a jpop fan, I like non visual jrock too… Often I will get into a band or musician in one “genre” then check what’s similar and stick around but not as obsessively. To put plainly I like artists over genre.

1999 through Rurouni Kenshin first tv run in Brazil. L’Arc got me started. Funny thing is the brazilian transmission used to simply cut OPs and EDs, but I was obsessed with the anime and found out about them online. mIRC got me my first downloads, then people there talked about Janne, Psycho le Cému, Malice Mizer and the rest is history.

Since 2008 for me. Wild to think it’s closer to 20 than to 10

December last year, which is a fancy way to say I don’t know my shit because it’s only been four months <3
I will confirm that I am one of the (20 years old) “kids these days” who saw a random clip of Malice Mizer on Instagram and just had to know more. Though to be fair I was raised on the musical Mozart l’Opéra Rock, which is pretty much as close to visual kei as you can get in France. It’s been a lot of fun so far!

2011 for me. Started with PIERROT as an opening for the anime GetBackers, and then I moved onto 12012, D’espa, An Cafe, Kagerou and GazettE. This is my longest running interest, and I’m too committed to ever move on.

Imagine being born after 2005. Impossible. Unthinkable.

Really though. it’s been fun to meet younger fans. I go to a monthly harajuku themed event and I’ve met quite a few new fans in their teens and 20’s. I like to ask how they found out about VK and what their faves are, I also love being able to suggest older groups to newer fans. Likewise, I’ve gotten into newer groups like XaaXaa because of them.

One time though, a youngster killed me because they were like “oh deadman. Yeah I know them. They’re newer, but I hope they continue.” And I coughed and laughed.
I guess all of Deadman’s albums on Spotify said they were released in 2023 or something.
Funny stuff.

Also I’ll note. People think I’m an old VK fan, but I was delighted to find out that Yoshiatsu Dadaroma man is, in fact, older than me. Lol so take that.

Yoshiatsu is my favorite! ehehe… I was born very much after 2005 unfortunately, but I love this community because of people like you. My first band I knew formed in 2018, so I appreciate hearing about some bands that existed before my existence was even an idea haha

Ah, but then you are tragically missing out on the supreme experience of learning about band members who are exactly your parents’ age XD why were my parents not rocking out in 1996!

I got into it quite late compared to a lot of you guys, think it was around 2012/3 when i was studying Japanese I got talking to a girl who was a massive Dir fan and that just opened up the whole VK world to me. I do feel its maybe a shame to have missed some of the earlier years of the genre but have been into metal of various types since pretty much i came out the womb, just went so long without knowing the genre existed. Obviously it was the looks and aesthetic of the videos/release covers etc… that first caught my attention but then loved how creative some of these bands were and all in a style which was new and fresh to me.
