太陽の碧 is probably one of my most favorite songs in the catalog. Surprised how many people hate it. I kind of get it though. If you are not into the whole poppy sound, I can see where it is not for you.

Agree on the edginess. It was little too try hard for me. Almost immature at times. I think that is big reason I am not that high on it. Agree on the production being what it needs to be. The energy is good but songs just aren’t interesting to me. I actually saw them live for this album. I much preferred it live because you can release a lot of energy to it but I don’t really put on headphones and just listen to the album. They definitely redeemed themselves on Uroboros for me. One of the best albums they released.

Yeah, what was that weird short phase he went thru? He played a similar solo in Secret Mode by Decays.
I actually LOVE that solo!! I feel like most of Tefu Tefu leading up to the solo is like, a caged animal trying to break out, the song feels stressed and uneasy and trapped. But then that solo hits and the way it has so many weird chromatic runs and out-of-key string bends, to me it feels like that trapped energy finally exploding in a gross and desperate burst of aggression while still trying to be melodic in some fashion

Haha fair enough! I mean I like the rest of the song fine but I always wondered what he was trying to do with that, maybe youre right and it was totally deliberate but I always felt like it was something he wrote in a rush and just stuck with it. Haha.
Ngl, Ranunculus is not something that stays on my mind for long. But I just have a sweet spot for it & it came out earlier so it did had that novelty atm (…despite being a more dramatic Kasumi, lol).
There’s also this weird intro that Kaoru plays. You can even see him recording it in the studio:

Hahaha out of context that clip is actually pretty hilarious. But to be fair thats not that weird in my opinion, he’s just getting some feedback rather than writing something strange, nothing wrong with using noise as part of the composition. One of my old bands it was part of my writing style for the material was more using the guitar + fx to just make weird noises at times rather than focus on using different notes. Though honestly, most of it was coherent riffs. Haha.
Arche, except for Rinkaku, Uroko and Phenomenon - made me go missing on DEG for years until now. On the bright side, I have 3 whole albums to listen now!

God damn I had shit taste in 2023. Kamuy is great.
I would amend this and add S, Jesus Christ R’n R, Kasumi (The Unraveling version), The Domestic Fucker Family (Kisou version), and KR Cube.
The only redeeming quality to KR Cube is the PV, which is singlehandedly the greatest thing ever committed to video.

it’s certainly the most overrated Dir en grey song. Among many fans it achieved this mythical status for a reason I can’t explain.
If it was 2 and a half minutes long I’d probably like it more. Instead they said, “hey, those 2 and a half minutes were really good, let’s just do it all over again”.

Yeah the mythical status it has baffles me. I think it has solid ideas instrumentally, but Kyo’s performance is so irritating that I just can’t stomach the song at all - and I think I’m usually really tolerant of Kyo’s antics.
Funny enough, I think they could maybe fix it if they did a remake with the Mortal Downer approach. Just give Kyo a Xanax and let him vibe

It’s true that PV was absolutely killer, both literally and figuratively. One of their best PV in my opinion.
Fuck it, I’ll let Taiyou no Ao of the hook since i vibed with it a lot last summer after making a short summer vacation trade-off.
After checking the tracklist I’ve realized I don’t really hate any songs. Maybe I usually ignore Deity, Myaku (live versions are nice tho) and Hotarubi, plus I’m not a fan of 2000 ver. Children.
And since we have Mortal Downer now I’m fine with saying that I still don’t vibe with Kusabi. A DSS-coded heavy number that does nothing for me.
