Nah, M.E.R.R.Y. rules over NuChemical Rhetoric and Peep Show and I’ll die on that hill. (I was going to say it’s the best of their major label releases, but under-world is that album, can’t decide between the two.)
Peep Show’s gotta be my least favorite by a landslide
I can’t even remember a single song from it unless I think really, really hard
Peep Show, M.E.R.R.Y, and Underworld was that awful era where it sounded like Merry recorded everything inside a tin can. Beautiful Freaks fixed that, but I hated the rerecorded version of The Cry Against ME.
Production was very special but their songs were amazing compositions in this era… !
HYDE also wore dreadlocks.
Edit: Apologies for throwing this a little bit off topic regarding the African hairstyle again.
Move along now, nothing to see here.
yeah the production on M.E.R.R.Y. and underworld is definitely kinda rough but it felt like a major improvement after Peep Show which I found damn near unlistenable
it’s a very pots-and-pans-banging-together-sounding-ass album
Excited for a new album! I’m a bit worried with the guitarist gone, but I have a feeling their 20+ years of experience won’t let us down.
Totally agree. I actually like the crappy production of those two albums, feels like it fit the theme. Peep Show as an album I am not a fan of.
My favorite Merry albums in order from favorite to least:
nu Chemical Rhetoric > Modern garde > Gendai stoic > Peep Show > Beautiful Freaks > everything else
Beautiful Freaks >>>>>>>
Almost exactly mine, I’d just slap an ‘equal’ sign between the first two and put Under-world next to Peep Show and done (oh and put Beautiful Freaks a bit lower).
For me it’s Modern garde > Gekisei > nu Chemical Rhetoric > Gendai stoic > Under-World
That’s kinda those I listen to whenever I put on some Merry. I do love Peep Show and M.E.R.R.Y. as well, but they’re simply not nearly as good as the ones listed above.
The albums speaks for themselves, but my reasoning for including Gekisei is the cover tracks. The title track is a monster of a song and a top 3 Merry track, but both the cover tracks are executed beautifully, and they both fit the band like a hand in a glove. And I’ve always been slightly disappointed with the band never following up on this style of music, either by making an original album filled with this type of music (preferable for sure), or simply a full album of cover tracks in the same vein. I’m not a huge fan of cover albums, but this would’ve been an exception for sure. Those two cover tracks are just out of this world.
I’ll just say, the disrespect for Kouseiha Blend ~Oldies Tracks~ in this thread! Even in periods when I don’t listen to Merry, I will return to it, it’s so brimming with ideas. (And here I would drop a ranking, if I could ever decide between the 4 or so albums fighting for the second spot. Moderngarde is, of course, number one.)
Was the Gekisei single the one that had a cover of an enka song?
I just found out about the new album surfing IG and rushed over here because I was mad at the comments on their new visuals. I didn’t see any mention of how Nero’s shirt and his lips are connected… anyways
Because of the sick new visuals and the title STRIP + 20th Anniversary, I got really excited at first. Then it subsided watching the YT announcement and stripping down/away to get to the nitty gritty is still cool but the Love theme is about that time I tune out of an artist (not) explaining their concept so I got unexcited. I’m not a fan of hope and happiness and I fear this will too pervade the sound of these new tracks. Currently don’t have splurge money anyway, but would like to support and have a piece of 20th anniversary in my collection. Do they still do member cards? Because I want a mannequin Yuu one.
Omg! I just realized, these visuals take me back to watching Under the Skin. A great film. Yes…yes… I guess I’m saving some money then.
That’s funny 'cause the last thing I expect of Merry is a wholly hopeful and happy album. I mean, there’s usually some sort of light in their songs and a whole Happy Life exists, but for each Happy Life there are five Kasa to Ame’s, you know? It would be fun to see at least.
It’s really exciting for me, actually, because when Merry touch on love in their songs, the results are usually interesting. The theme of love combined with the title reminds me of Montage from their songs, and this one (the live performance especially) is in my top ten Merry songs easily.
I can’t give a fully thought out honest opinion because I don’t remember anything past Peep Show. And that Happy Life stuff scared me away. But like I said, Sound. I’m sure Gara’s lyrics are as hmm sappy? sad? lonely? weird? edgy? as ever, but from what little I’ve heard, the overall sound is not making me want more.
I just listened to Montage and thought, “I’ve heard this before” as in a previous album and while I know I listened extensively to a few post Peep Show albums, my ears apparently could care less. So, maybe not hope, happiness and love per se. Maybe Merry be boring and I want something new? Maybe Merry can only be Merry and I’m just over the hype of my youth? Regardless I’m excited to hear what’s bloomed from this pandemic.
montage was 13 years ago
I just hope the new album doesn’t suck balls like M-OLOGIE did
