Well that went about as well as expected…

The most shocking thing here is that there are actually people watching and listening to this shitty-ass band.

They’re like the Japanese AJR

Candy Foxx’s Curry Police: Electric Boogaloo

Here’s the video on Internet Archive:

Lyrics

Until the Day I Fall Asleep
500 million years ago,
I took a little detour on a whim,
Even then, I couldn’t tell you.

The great inventions,
The discovered cells,
The creation flowing
In the ocean waves.

Like the day when I will fall asleep,
An uncertain but definite goal,
An unexpectedly pleasant everyday life,
Pouring into my thirsty heart,
Zooming in on a little miracle.
It doesn’t mean anything,
But still, still, still, I haven’t noticed yet,
I want to drink up love today too.

Tu-ru-ru-tu
Tu-ru-ru-tu
Tu-ru-ru-tu
Tu-tu-tu, tu-ru-ru-tu
Tu-ru-ru-tu
Tu-ru-ru-tu
Tu-ru-ru-tu
Tu-tu-tu, tu-ru

“I’m sorry,”
It’s the hardest thing to say,
On my way to growing up,
I couldn’t say it.

The evolution of civilization,
The historic comebacks,
The exhilaration of Columbus,
Heard from the depths of the earth.

Like the loneliness you’ll overcome someday,
The equal morning sun and night sky,
An everyday life that makes your stomach ache,
Straightening my thirsty heart,
Zooming in on a little bit of aesthetics.
It means everything,
But still, still, still, I end up hurting,
Learning from sorrow today too.

The differences with you,
Are a curse to be myself,
Though I remain dejected,
I can’t truly hate
Such a self.
Ah, the honorable wounds to be loved,
Celebrate grandly the subtle things
That seem so important.

Continuing somewhere,
An uncertain but definite goal,
An unexpectedly quick everyday life,
Pouring into my thirsty heart,
Zooming in on a little bit of play.
We’ll connect with each other,
Until, until, until we drop,
I want to drink up today with you too.

Tu-ru-ru-tu
Tu-ru-ru-tu (Woah)
Tu-ru-ru-tu
Tu-tu-tu, tu-ru-ru

“I want to know you,”
Like it’s an adventure,
Touching gently on a kind solitude,
That no one else could know.
“I want to know you,”
Like the aurora,
Reaching a wonderful scenery,
That no one has yet known.
Look, the boat moves forward again,
Repeating meetings and farewells.
To give meaning to these teary eyes,
First, we search for a treasure chest.

As for my personal thoughts on the band, objectively they’re not that bad, in fact, I like their earlier stuff. If we’re talking about the music they’re churning out lately, the AJR comparison is spot-on  . Sekai no Owari and Mrs. Green Apple occupy a similar section of my brain, not very much of it and mostly memes/flubs.

In one of two apology statements posted yesterday, the band said they had intended to depict “life forms of different ages having a home party”.
"We were concerned from the beginning that [the apes] might be seen as discriminatory expression, but we had no intention of likening apes to humans.
“We never intended to make the content discriminatory or to make it something that affirms tragic history,” it said.

such assholes, extremely intentional because texting like “we didn’t know” “it wasn’t our intention” doesn’t work anymore!

A video like this go through several iterations and production phases. Many many people worked on it. Claim innocence is plain stupid

You knew what you were doing, and you did it anyways

Every single time this happens is the same farce, it’s tiring

They have some great songs, but I fell off after their first album. The IA video embed not working for anyone else?

Works, but it does have issues buffering. You can right click to download if you want.

Otherwise, here’s a YT re-up. Might be taken down eventually:

Thanks for the video.
So they dress up as some European historical figures (Napoleon, Beethoven, Colombus), as Japanese tend to like European history and aesthetics. And they dance around with some people dressed as monkeys and show them all the cool things they think Europeans/humans have. 100% this came from a place of innocence.
I can’t say the same about the music.

I can buy this being done out of innocence.

Unfortunately, it’s also 100% ignorant.

Though, sadly, I also don’t expect the average Japanese person to be well educated on or even aware of the implications stuff like this has on the marginalized.

I suppose they’re finding out now, though.

Eh now that I’ve seen this in full the only offensive thing was the music video production; pretty bad. I can definitely see how they’re just the representation of prehistoric man in a nod to Darwin and the entire thing is basically an homage to adventurous discovery. :man_shrugging:t2: Song could be better for sure.

Are you asking me this because I think this video came about as described here

Instead of being due to these Japanese pop stars being white supremacists?

I honestly dont think there was any ill will that went into this (besides the musif itself being pretty terrible) I think as said above ignorance is the main thing here. That said, I also feel like if their intentions were far from what people have misinterpreted it as it probably didnt occur to them for one minute that people would be offended by something that wasnt supposed to contain any potentially offensive material. The whole video is so dumb anyway, how are people taking it seriously enough to be offended to begin with? Speaks more about the current state of society than the band imo.

fun story that i’m just typing as a fun story, no other meaning… (嘘)

i’m in this band XROSZ (hey check us out on spotify) and we pronounce it like ‘cross’. it’s just a funny spelling of that word.

We’re writing this this gyakudai kinda song back in 2020.
Vocalist writes these lyrics that get shouted and sung repeatedly in the chorus:
“burn it away, burn it away, burn it away…”
so we think ok got it, the song is called Burn, simple.

wasn’t until we were pulling up the exported demo on our phones w/ metadata we saw it listed as “Burn - XROSZ” and flashing red alert ABORT ABORT BAD DECISION signals went up for all three of us.

I mean, we meant nothing bad by it, but… imagine us not changing it lmao
it’d be straight indefensible.
the song’s called Downfall now, we just pulled from other lyrics.

But like. we were three guys, 100% indie, no one on ‘staff’ but our gfs helping us film PVs.
They didn’t even hear about the almost-name until we were laughing later about how we almost walked blindfolded into a terrible decision.

No one had a gun to our heads, no one ‘called us out’, there was no cancelling or pressure, etc etc etc. We just caught an honest mistake and figured: we lose literally zero by changing our song name, and the benefit is we don’t carelessly invoke ahhh, that kind of imagery.

writing my example to say - you don’t get to invoke a name like christopher columbus without taking full responsibility for everything you’re saying.
If we put out our song w/ that name, we’d take full responsibility, bc i stand by what i write - and if hearing of that association was new to us, the only decent way to act would be for us to apologize, say it’s an honest mistake and we didn’t know - but then, crucially: fix it by swapping the name to something else. No gaslighting about how our intent is more relevant or somehow takes priority over someone’s read.

Just… honest mistake (maybe) → apply the info you’ve just learned about how to make your art that you care about less shitty to marginalized people → say my b, thanks for the heads up → move on

Yeah, like it “makes sense”, it’s just got enough moments where it goes into HMMMMM territory (the monkey pulling the cart that the guy is riding, for example) that ends up veering over into YIKES.

In a sense, it kind of does do an excellent job of depicting the two-facedness of “civilization”, so I guess they did achieve A Thing if you watch it as satire.
