I’m a boomer who refused to use modern streaming platforms until I had my first child and began looking for children’s music to play. It just so happened there was also a lot of J-Rock on there, and now my library is a mix of terrible kids music and VK.

I still prefer ‘ownership’ of my music through actual downloads or physicals though. I like to be in control and hate being at the mercy of these corporation’s whims.

Is there a “none” option

Fellow boomer here, and I used to be the exact same way: I owned hundreds of physical records and maintained a digital collection in a, perhaps, absurdly meticulous way. But once I became a family man, most of that gave way to the sheer convenience of streaming.

And I agree, I’ve really been surprised at the amount of stuff you can find on streaming these days. I’ve come across so many J-indie releases from the 2000’s on spotify that were considered “rare” at one point. Funny how the times change.

Apple Music unless Spotify is giving out free months.

For real. When I was a teenager we dreamed of days when Japanese hip hop would be on iTunes much less streaming and now it’s everywhere. The days of P2P, digging through crates and requesting and uploading on invisionFree and LJ is long gone.

I have Spotify and Apple Music hooked up to the tv, but that’s the extent of my streaming service usage.

I use (free) Spotify as a on-demand radio that stream only stuff I like.

Of course I’d never part with my CDs.

I have a Spotify subscription but I’ve thought of switching to Qobuz since it was mentioned in a zine released by craftordiy; I’ve also considered incorporating Soulseek for discovering music. Besides Spotify, I buy releases from Bandcamp pages and merch tables. I also buy at record stores and thrift stores.

There is a beauty of having something tangible, whether it’s cassettes, CDs, VHS tapes, vinyl. Also having physical media frees me from the concerns of licensing deals reaching their expiration or sudden removal.

I use Spotify while also maintaining my physical cd/tape collection because I have to have music while I’m on the go (and I’m stuck on paying premium because I absolutely CANNOT stand ads). I have too much trust issues with putting my music files onto my phone since iTunes wiped out my library twice and I’m too much of a boomer to figure out how to put them onto my Spotify ;w; nvm i figured it out! i’m in with the times now!!

I use spotify but also love my physical CDs so much. Also, if there are no CDs avaliable, I use bandcamp to purchase the music. Spotify is nice to discover new bands too.

Apple Music, as it’s the easiest way to stream my ripped CD.
But I’m considering switching to Roon, and only listen to my rips.

Apple Music on the go (incl. ripped albums from my physical collection)

ROON + Qobuz at home (which unifies all my rips, digital collection and lossless streaming)

I’m a boomer myself (lol, I’m 34) but I still maintain my meticulously crafted iTunes library. It’s fun for me and I’ll never be a Family Guy so it’s a nice hobby for me. I always preferred the ownership of my files (including movies/TV shows etc) because I don’t trust the streaming sites to have what I want all the time.

But I have what I want all the time.

I have an account on Spotify for half a year now but I never listen to music through it (except for two songs recently when I couldn’t sleep but stayed in bed and tried them out ahead of the physical release these songs where digitally released in advance).
So if I used one it were Spotify but I can’t say I’m really using it.

Pre 2020 Spotify did not have a lot of visual kei so I was also subscribed to Apple music to compensate. I dropped Apple once bands caught up to speed with Spotify a few years later.

I enjoy streaming for the ability to listen to new music as it releases but do consciously try to purchase albums I really care about to support the artist and to future proof my collection.

23 year old boomer here

I just buy CD’s or digital releases on iTunes, and then I put my rips on my phone’s SD card and use the Samsung music app

Otherwise the YouTube app or website has some mix playlists I listen to sometimes, usually while I work my job on my computer

Apple Music (JP). Was also a ROON + Qobuz user, but I’m in my semi-recluse physical media era, so I couldn’t justify the additional subscriptions.

I mostly use Spotify and YouTube for on the go convenience because my current car only uses CarPlay and Bluetooth (no CD player, no aux, no older model USB plug ins). Prior to 2021, I only used any streaming for trying out new artists but then would directly download music and listen on my iPod Classic. My music collection is too chaotic and massive for me to copy it all to my phone. I’m happy having “home music” and “work/car music.”

I’m only subscribed to Apple music simply because I’m an iPhone user and that music app is already preinstalled :man_shrugging:

I pretty much gave up on my digital collection since it got wiped from a faulty drive I used to own.
