Saw Cryptopsy and Death to All earlier this week - really excellent show, definitely recommend catching both acts if possible. Death to All played a set of selections from the entire Death catalogue, which was so cool. They even played Suicide Machine, which is probably my favorite ever Death song. I was disappointed when I noticed I didn’t have any other metal shows on the horizon, until…
Panopticon has been one of my favorite metal bands for a little while now, and they’re finally going far enough into my region that I’ll probably go see them! Very excited
Ghetto Ghouls is out with a new EP. A short crossover thrasher paying homage to classic punky rock movies like Wild Zero, Repo Man, Hard Rock Zombies and Six String Samurai.
I love both black metal and visual kei but i don’t know other vkei black metal bands other than Madmans Esprit and Endless Dismal Moan can somebody help😣
I don’t think you will find any visual kei bands with that criteria I’m afraid, at least not ones that made it their whole ‘thing’ to be influenced by black metal (maybe some short riffs and parts of a song or two within one artist’s catalogue at most). For example there’s like one song by E’m~grief~ that rips off a few moments from Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir.
tbh I wouldn’t categorize Madmans Esprit as black metal or Endless Dismal Moan as vk either (latter is just black metal, albeit done by a musician who was also part of a visual kei-ish band).
please forgive the extreme self promo here but i did one song that might fit this!
the opening’s electronic, but after that we tried to aim for that atmospheric deafheaven-y sphere of black metal. i’m no Garm or Ihsahn but i give a try at that 90s style harsh vocal underneath my usual vocal style, which is something of a mess of vkei tropes filtered through english.
Both this and the cover for “Blizzard of Death” were made by the one and only, and incredibly talented Andrei Bouzikov. It is mixed by Erik Lindberg (Lowest Creature - Witch Supreme), mastered by none other than Joel Grind of Toxic Holocaust fame, and with a brand new logo by Joey Burke of crossover thrashers Ninth Realm.
For fans of Power Trip, Enforced, Lowest Creature, High Command, Ninth Realm, Inhuman Nature etc.
i’ve been listening to Periphery (do people consider them metal?) lately - the instrumentals and the sound of the guy’s voice are both nice to listen to. But after hearing almost all my guitars music from Japan and Norway before, it’s so jarring hearing the actual words in my native language in a genre like this.
I mean to his credit, this guy goes hard and gives it his all, singing and screaming with conviction! But then, with that being true, the words will be like
"FROM HEAD TO FUCKING TOES >:( "
New Swallow the Sun album is pretty not great. I appreciate the lead songwriter looking out for his mental/spiritual well-being…but damn. Really kinda shit the bed with this one - and smack-dab in the middle of gothic doom season, too.
Here’s a cool band on the rise to keep an eye on. Some people are calling this melodic black metal, and sure, but that’s an oversimplification if you ask me.
Clean female vocals and dual lead guitars with a bit of a 70s hard rock style at times. This song in particular has a bit of a deathrock thing going on.
That Scimitar album is excellent. There is clearly elements of black metal and all that, but I’d probably call it blackened heavy metal if anything. I hear lots of Mortuary Drape, Hexenbrett and Malokarpatan in the sound, as well as 70s occult rock and stuff.
But it’s different, unique and really good. Absolute fantastic stuff!
