Visual Kei in other media

There is a series of 4 Japan exclusive rhythm games called “Rock’n Tread” released in 1999 and 2000 in which you play as a band that looks kinda VKish and you can choose some songs by VK bands such as “Pink Spider” by hide with Spread Beaver, “Melty Love” by SHAZNA & L’Arc~en~Ciel’s “Heaven’s Drive”.

Here’s a clip of someone playing Laruku’s song:

Anyone from Canada or maybe Eastern Europe/ ex Soviet Union remembers a Canadian cartoon called Pig City? It was quite popular around 2003-2005 where I lived. They go to Japan at some point and see some different Japanese bands, I think there is a band that you can see at 8:58 for about 10 seconds that looks like it’s inspired by visual kei

The cartoon is so obscure, I only found it translated to Russian

Lol, yes. I vaguely remember this episode playing in the background at one point. Good find.

Yuko Suzuhana from Wagakki Band will sing the Japanese national anthem in this year’s closing of the MotorGP competition, which will be held on October 1st at the Mobility Resort Motegi Circuit in Hiyama County.

Speaking of Wagakki Band, their jacked up drummer shows up in the PV for GOLDEN BOMBER’s jacked up drummer’s new solo song, which’s literally about shitting. Dope stuff:

lol I remember Kamijo’s famous line in that dorama…
“美しい薔薇は棘がある。かわいい赤ちゃんは、髭がない!!!”
(the beautiful rose has thorn. the cute baby doesn’t have beard!)

Maybe a bit too obvious, but how about movies with VK “actors”?

Miyavi in Unbroken

Gackt in Bunraku

And of course…Gackt and HYDE in MOON CHILD

Oh my, do I regret watching these movies. Yikes. And I believe I already mentioned these when I wrote about the shitload of VK “actors” in the Kamen Rider franchise

Anyways, -真天地開闢集団-ジグザグ (Zigzag) is the latest VK band to collab with Sanrio for an event. Starting tomorrow, cuddly toys of the band designed by Sanrio will be available in UFO-catcher Sega Prize slot machines around Japan. Merch from their previous collab is avaliable here

This ain’t Sanrio’s 1st collab with a VK artist, tough. The most famous is yoshikitty, with the cringelord grandma from X JAPAN:

the Raid. taped a whole live DVD in their theme park in 2019:

Also in 2019 Miya from MUCC composed the OST featuring NOCTURNAL BLOODLUST’s vocalist for this horror event in their theme park:

INTETSU (インテツ ) from AYABIE composed the song in this video for the 10th anniversary of one of their mascots:

In 2016 there was tour called 「D Produce “Mad Tea Party” カウントダウン ワンマン フェスティバル in サンリオピューロランド」。They also invited GOTCHAROCKA, NoGoD, Kaya, Jin-Machine, ギガマウス and some other non-VK bands to perform in Sanrio’s Puroland
001
AN CAFE also performed there in xmas 2015

If Wagakki Band are keep getting mentioned in this thread I will turn this into a “JRock in other media” thread instead… :triumph:

and then I will slap each and every collab Ryo Kinoshita had with a western band in here :smirk:

Listed as non-visual here as well.

What about VK bands doing soundtracks?

X JAPAN’s “IV” was used in Saw IV for the credits (it’s…something…I guess…)

DIR EN GREY’s “Hageshisa to…” was on the soundtrack of SAW 3D (However, I don’t think it was in the movie, only on the official “Music inspired by the film” sampler)

MUCC’s “FUZZ” was used in Cloverfield (during the party scene) and on an exclusive soundtrack CD given out at the movie premiere

MUCC’s “Kyoran kyosho” was used in a trailer/soundtrack for the Japanese horror movie Fuan no tane

I like this idea enough that I think it deserves its own thread. This thread is about vk music appearing in other non-music media, but a thread like “East Meets West” to cover musical collaborations between J-rockers and westerners would be cool.

I’ve only know about Gackt, can you give more examples?

SOPHIA’s vocalist played a major role in Kamen Rider W and provided OST for Kamen Rider Drive as well as some other guest appearances and songs in some spin-offs with both his band and his solo carreer.

Kiryuin Sho from Golden Bomber provided OST for Kamen Rider Wizard and its video game and is rumored to have made multiple uncredited guest appearances here and there in the franchise.

Kenji Ohtsuki from Kinniku Shoujo Tai & Tokusatsu is the main antagonist in the movie Kamen Rider Heisei Generations Final: Build & Ex-Aid with Legend Riders. He’s also responsible for the OST of another tokusatsu series: Ryukendo

And tatsuo from from everset, while not a VK musician per se, composes for A LOT of VK musicians and has also been responsible for a lot of Kamen Rider OSTs in the recent series.
