Visual kei mysteries

Most likely Eternal shutting down, causing the band’s fate to be unclear. The Eternal shut-down caused quite a bit of chaos, and many bands to disband

Do major labels still keep fruitless bands pv’s in the vaults, mebbe a master tape? I see some old vhs of them doing whole music videos but only feature a 1 minute commentary of the band mopping and 20 seconds of the video itself with live dates and locations.

How’s lustknots vocalist doing now?

Why does ayabie change their name every day?

Why do bands that disband 20 years ago start activities again when they’re all 43 years old?

How come psycho le cemu’s vocalist got off on drug charges but not hideki tanuichi?

By the way, is there a documentary or a making of that focuses on vk bands daily lives? Or solo artists outsourcing to foreigners? How does that even happen? Do they have catalogues of artists? Are they suggested by their label agents? I think I answered my own questions but it would be interesting being in a salarymans shoes for a day.

Who is yoshiki? Is he the boogeyman of vk? Because the only thing that comes to my mind is this picture

Like someone you’ll find peeping through your window and never question it like ‘‘that’s some classic yoshiki rite there’’

Is there any unreleased holy grail of a song that everyone heard in a live show and nowhere else?

How come the crossdressers in bands get married first?

Why do people who disappear from bands close official accounts but create ones that only showcase their cats?

And can someone link me a site of bandomens spankbanks or nudes, for scientific purposes ofc.

I thought of making this thread after discovering a pretty interesting bandman while going down a rabbithole of band history on vkgy, beginning with the band Ren (恋). The bandman I’ve discovered was a vocalist named Aki. He played in the band Child Pray with Ren’s guitarist, Jun.

The main reason Aki fascinated me was he managed to play in 12 different bands ever since around 2006 or so, with the vast majority having lasted for under a year. He’s been in the VK scene for probably over half a decade, and yet I’ve never once heard of him or any of his bands until today. Further adding to my curiosity was the fact that he released NOTHING in ALL of his bands except just one, Velveol, which released one obscure single.

Every other band he played in released nothing, if not attended 1 or 2 obscure live shows at best.

Despite his obscurity, he managed to play with many noteworthy bandmen in the VK scene. Here’s his vkgy profile:

Here are some of his band photos and the noteworthy members.

Peerless (2006) (Poltergeist drummer Kei former band)

HysteriA (2008) (Tatsuya from Vambie and Blitz former band)

Child Pray (2009) (Former Ren, Diement/GRIMOIRE, and It/As If in the darkness members)

L’cie (Eremia guitarist, Renka)

So I just thought; who is this guy and how has he played in so many obscure bands, with so many noteworthy musicians in the indie scene, yet he managed to release nothing in any of his bands? What gives? Is he a terrible vocalist who can’t sell music? How is he playing with all these noteworthy indie musicians only to consistently release nothing and break up a few months later?

I did some digging, so I could hopefully hear AT LEAST ONE of his bands to get an idea of what his vocals sound like. My speculation was that if the best this guy has done over the course of 6 years is release one obscure single that nobody knows about then he probably didn’t sound very good. But for all the reasons listed my curiosity kept eating at me.

Then I managed to find this: It’s HysteriA!!!

It all made sense. I wouldn’t have expected his music to sell very well after listening to this.

I wanted to like it, but I feel like he could do much better if he really tried. I’m really curious to hear what his final band L’cie sounded like. Maybe he improved since then, but I’ll probably never find out.

Still I find Aki to be a very interesting vocalist in the VK scene, because there are so many others like him. In VK it is very common for unknown bands to form, play at a show or two at best, release nothing if not one obscure single, and then disband.

I feel like Aki embodies the indie VK bandman stereotype to a tee. He played with many interesting musicians in 12 or so bands, took a couple of pictures looking like a glammed up super saiyan, released nothing throughout his entire VK career, played in like 6 live shows, and that’s it. That’s his entire career in a nutshell. I’m very curious what people think about this common VK phenomenon.

Look at the quality of the promotional pics for at least the first three units you provided. Solid color background with the cheapest outfits outta the Five Below clearance rack indicates each of these units budgets’ would be jealous of a shoe string. The fact that they are continuous sessions makes a lot of sense: I always looked at continuous sessions as performances done for fun, or at least to see if there’s any synergy between members. They’re not necessarily any more established than a garage rock band, and I think you have found a perfect example of one.

Visual kei is rough but it’s also a self-selecting scene where talent will inevitably be recognized in one form or another - or you get phased out. We love the fantasy but yen runs the scene, we know it takes a substantial amount of it to fund activities, including outfits and studio time. Gazing over his activities, I never see the intent to step up and make it - he may have been happy doing what he was doing for as long as he could do it. Even though 95% of us are locked out of it, live performances are the lifeblood of music and this scene is no exception. Show up, play a few tracks, maybe get some pussy, no expectations beyond that really.

These units are the equivalent of some Nashville four piece playing outlaw country at a dingy hole in the wall bar where people wanna hear Jesus Take The Wheel and got a poor imitation of Johnny Cash instead, so I’m not surprised that someone at the bottom rung of visual kei never did anything notable.

In all honesty if the only way you can describe my career is through the context of more successful musicians I’d quit too.

Thanks for the deep dive and context! Fun little rabbit hole you found here. This vocalist does indeed suck ass, but I appreciate his tenacity, haha.

Love stuff like this, speculating on the careers of random weird guys is half the fun of being a VK nerd

Well, a lot of bandomen doing that because it’s fun, not because they want to release something or be famous…

Yeah, that sucks too.

But who was bass in Cuckoo?

If you mean the band with Sharaku/Ao/Sasabuchi, then on tracks 1 and 2 of their single the bassist was masa from post-rock bands te’ and miimi, while track 3 was played by 高井淳 (Takai Jun) from Waive (and a bunch of other acts where he played support).

That’s exactly who I meant! Thank you. I didn’t dig too deep but I couldn’t find any credits online, which really puzzled me.

Why can’t we ever be told the height of Visual Kei guys. I can understand why real name, make-up less face and real eye color can be hidden but there height? They can simply lie and say it’s the one when they have some form of platform inside there shoes.

Some guys are insecure about their height :person_shrugging:

That’s your question?
Not why japanese are more interested in bloodtypes then where they come from because I don’t even know my own blood type but you’re strung on their height?
Why not their age? or their hometown but nah their height heh.
You guys are funny.
I’m more interested in why girls take photos of these rockstars or actors hands rather then with them.

To the Japanese blood types work sorta like zodiac signs. certain blood types are linked to certain personalities and characteristics. some go well together and some don’t.

The bigger question is O is the rarest bloodtype but I swear any band I look at half of the members has O type blood.

How is that possible? Are there vampires in japan? maybe vlad teppes just moved countries.

So my blood is either b - or positive what does this mean?! just looked at it and it says I’m selfish

Working 90 hours a week fried their brains I swear to god.
Fuck zodiac signs man
The people who made these are christian moms who’s pent up libido is watching 50 shades of grey and put every checkered box of personality stereotypes and slammed it with different synonyms.
