DIR EN GREY New Single "The Devil In Me" Release

This is the truest thing I’ve ever seen about Dir en Grey fans (me included)

Not hanging out with them because they would be confused by misuse of terminology? I didn’t say they would be mean about it they’d just be expecting something completely different if they hadn’t heard Dir en grey before. Nothing Kyo does even sounds like a pig. The pig squeal technique is something he hasn’t touched on and it actually does sound something like a pig.
Also Dir en grey has never had a breakdown of the type used in the -core genres - the term breakdown is used outside of that context but given that your description was coupled with the term pig squeals which is another -core genre term I wanted to say no segment of any Dir en grey song would count as a breakdown as -core genre listeners use it (maybe that one part of Hageshisa after “dive like hell…” could count but it would be a weird breakdown. It’s breakdown-like).
Kyo has also never mumble rapped and has never rapped in a chorus so both would actually be something new. And barely uses English lyrics.

Featuring Zan part 4.

I just want more of the creepy “oh ma ma ma ma ehhhhh” from Blossoming Belzebub

Honestly that song features some of my favourite Kyo performance ever.

Kind of pointless to speculate maybe lol but do you guys think they dare to try something new with this single/a new direction for their next album (that starts with this single)?

Thinking about it, has DeG ever gone crazy with a new release or always played it kind of safe? Im checking their discography now and the singles they have released the last 10 years or so have no real surprises. With this I mean they all feel like “yeah thats indeed a deg song that deg would release”.

Maybe its stupid to expect something totally new from them at this point…

The only one I find here that doesn’t really feel like DeG is… maybe Jessica from 2001, 23 years ago… what do you guys say?

thanks for taking time to write all of that down \m/ appreciate the effort you’ve put into clarifying of the distinctions, all def helps with cementing my decision to avoid str8 ppl talking about str8 genres of music forever.

how many layers of wig are we expecting for the photos and PV that will come with this song?

I’m prepared a lot of screaming and a lot of edgy sound processing, bordering on unlistenable, for the album, repeating TIW approach but pushed even more as far as aggressive, distorted sound goes.

I would be very pleasantly surprised if they end up recording a direct phalaris continuation though.

Die en grey in the last years feel like it got into a stale curse they get themselves not out even if they try.
I dislike the mastering for the last albums it sounds like you would record a demo and squeeze a professional mastering over it which still doesn’t save it.

As well there attempts of being innovative with songs end up having itself already repeated somewhere before in their discography in an already very Dir en grey fashion. (examples being the arbitrary 9 minute masterpieces).

I don’t feel any further progress in the band which felt before like a constant organic evolution which was for me also one of the things making this band so amazing.

No problem \m/ Not using the terminology would benefit you in that case.

i hope we get a band pic of kyo looking silly while the rest of the boys look bored - unless all of them want to do fun outfits again, that’s all i really want from a diru single rollout

Well technically they’ve been doing the 10 minute thing since Gauze with Mazohyst. Then Macabre on Macabre. If you look at it like that then it can seem like they’ve been doing the same thing from the start - but it’s all the things in between that sets them apart. None of their 10 minute songs are structurally similar. Kyo introduced new vocal styles on Phalaris and they added some elements of black metal. They’ve been changing things up with every album still.

Well,

In a recent aknot newsletter hyping up the Psychoconnect tour, the staff commented that the new single (19990120) represented a new direction in sound for the band.

Probably just a marketing gimmick, or the band could be in the process of shifting into a new sound. Only time will tell.

They market all their new releases as sounding like something you’ve never heard before. A new perspective on the human pain of existence in DIR EN GREY’s unique worldview. The truth of life is living.

And then they end up sustaining the untruth

embryo being a rap ballad was interesting.
six Ugly was insane at the time. Like split the fanbase kind of crazy. Same with the whole MARROW era.
Rinkaku being almost all falsetto was unique.

Likely not. They’re at a point where they don’t have to really change the formula to make bank. Which is ok. Bands get big and the NEED to experiment diminishes. Maybe one day they decide to try something crazy,. But I think the fact that members like Kyo are diverting their creative juices into other side projects speaks for itself.

I think it’s rare for a band of Deg’s caliber to continue evolving this far into their career and pull it off well. At this point something will need to hit them emotionally for them to pull out something spectacular in my opinion. But as is, we’re getting a consistent flow of content that’s serviceable to pretty great. Which is a good place for them and the fans to be at I think.

I think one thing that hurts them a bit is that all songs, in theory, are done by committee. We don’t really have Die’s songs, or Kaoru’s songs anymore. All credits are dir en grey as a whole (even if it’s not really true cause if you dig a bit in interviews, you can find who is the main composer of some songs)

Usually, I don’t think it’s a bad thing, but it drowns a bit their individuality. I’m not saying they need to go full lynch.'s last album and do create an cota of songs for everyone. But it won’t be an bad ideia either. Just to mix things up a little

I did wonder if after the latest single they will be going back to more that kind of style or at least using influences from their earlier days but who knows?

  • I have said it before but I don’t get why half of the people here even listen to DEG anymore, all you do is complain, if you dont like what they do now dont listen to them anymore… Also, i really dont understand people saying all their stuff sounds the same, literally every single album has a massive variety of atmosphere and tone throughout, way more than most other bands going atm. What do you want? A brutal death metal track followed by a ballad, followed by a bonafide hiphop track followed by a reggae track followed by an ambient track followed by a barbershop acapella number followed by a jazz track followed by a pop tune followed by a nu metal throwback then finishing off with a hardcore techno beat with a bonus track which is pure black metal?

For me it’s the complaining about a single that we know nothing about but the title :joy: but at least it’s entertaining while I wait for the new release, which I am exited about :eyes:

Something that sounds like Diru but entirly diffrent and new at the same time, I guess, is what some people want
