JRO's Community Best of 2024

It’s that time of year for us to come together and to share our top releases of the year. Everyone gets their personal Top 5, just like last year.

We may also turn everyone’s submissions into playlists on Spotify and YouTube.

Here are some guidelines:

  • You can include any release from 2024. It doesn’t matter if single, album, compilation or mini-album, the only condition is that it was released in 2024.

  • It doesn’t matter if the release is Visual Kei, J-Rock or J-Pop, the only limit is, that it must be a Japanese release.

  • Please include the name of the release and artist, and a sentence or two on why you like it so much is very appreciated. Optionally, include a music video or a song.

  • If you have a album or mini-album in your top 5 please highlight one or two songs that stuck out to you.

  • Feel free to make a “Worst 5” release list too.

  • Its fine to make several top 5’s, like Album Top 5 and Single Top 5.

I can’t promise you that the releases you will post will be on either Spotify or YouTube. But i want to provide others with the chance to dig through everyone’s music taste and see if there is something they like for themselves.
And maybe some can find some gems that were released this year or remember some you forgot about.

Further, we are going to have a global edition too.
Which you can find here, if you click me

I didn’t really listen to much Japanese music this year, but what I did listen to was immaculate. Here’s the five that stood out most:

Natsudaidai - 青果店
Such an exciting first EP, the instrumentals are so solid, the vocals so smooth. Really impressively constructed collection of songs.

NENE - GEKIATSU
Blistering, engaging EP. Nene is so fucking cool and compelling. The entire thing is such a bright spot on Japanese rap this year

kein - PARADOXONDOLORIS
I checked this out based on the incredible reception on the Discord, and once again this community proved itself to have the best taste.

-真天地開闢集団- ジグザグ - Gran ∞ Grace
Every year there’s a Zigzag release, there’s going to be a Zigzag released on my end of year list. Their songwriting suits me down to the ground, I cannot escape their clutches.

DownTownDogs - Fosho
The energy is immaculate. It’s such a fun, solid release that really flew under the radar.

  1. Petit Brabancon - Seven Garbage Born of Hatred
Yeah, this EP kinda grew on me. It’s definitely not Automata (especially since band ditched their creativity in this release), but there’s still plenty of dumb fun to enjoy.
    Highlight: Dub Driving
  1. Aooo - Aooo
I learned about this band (and their debut album) through a video called “What You Can Learn from Japanese Punk Rock”. Didn’t bother with watching the whole video since I just got in love with that intro. Very unusual mixing choices, pleasant vocals & overall nostalgic mood that brings back those teenage flashbacks - all this made this November much more bearable. Still, fuck November.
    Highlight: サラダボウル
  1. Lynch - FIERCE-EP
Hi lynch., are you gonna be releasing new stuff every year again? Anyway, FIERCE-EP is a pretty banger of a release (YOWAZZUP song notwithstanding), especially since this shorter playtime allowed them just to go full bonkers (compared to the more restrained REBORN).
    Highlight: REMAINS
  1. Dir en Grey - 19990120
Yeah I don’t care about their latest single. 19990120 tho? Not every release can make me say YOU FUCKING WHAT. Single full of their major debut singles rerecordings and it made me appreciate older material a bit more (especially since I would never imagine hearing Akuro no Oka live at all). But ey, this time I must tip my hat towards Takumi-san.
    Highlight: Yurameki
  1. East of Eden - Forbidden Fruit -2nd piece-
3 out of 5 bands have appeared both in 2023 and 2024 Community Best topics, so that gives you an idea of how much new stuff I actually check.
I liked their last year’s release, even tho singles overshadowed the rest. This time?.. eh, it’s a similar situation. Like, non-single stuff is definitely more interesting this time around, but their singles also stepped up their game. In any case, I definitely can’t complain about more new stuff from them (and I always appreciate this Falcom-esque sound).
    Highlight: Judgement Syndrome

Usually I venture more outside of VK (I swear…) but not this year

5 - Misanthrope - 硝子ノ縋憶ト輪廻ル疵痕
My favourite 90’s worship band in the scene atm. On this release you get two Crucifixion re-recordings and a longer version of their best song. Not much new but for 90’s kei this hit the spot perfectly this year.

Highlights: Gebet, 黒ノ醜宴 (Extended Version)

4 - CHAQLA. Kaihouban-Shin
This band has an interesting sound and this is good all throughout. Catchy alt-rock vk that is short and sweet.

Highlights: BACK TO THE FURTURE, 太陽の悪魔

3 - NAZARE - 幻想に咲かれては
Nearly every time this band releases something I think “this is one of their best songs” and the “best songs” just keep increasing year after year even though they’re releasing less now.

2 - THE MADNA - BLAZE
It’s sort of a oshare version of VANITAS (DIMLIM) but since Vanitas is one of the best VK songs ever made this is really good too. It’s very catchy and well done. The b-sides are cool too.

1- RENGEKI - NEOVISION
This album is by far my favourite thing from the VK scene this year. Recommended for fans of NAZARE and my favourite songs are the one’s that are HEAVILY NAZARE inspired. 届かぬ声、そしてまた甘受する。, 薄命, and 無情なり故に but most the songs are fun and catchy and the vocalist has that weird sounding but addictive VK voice. This song will either sell you or repel you

Highlights: 届かぬ声、そしてまた甘受する。and 薄命

Zeus’ Top 5 Japanese Releases of 2024 (in no order)

Even though this says Top 5, I’m going to pretend I don’t know how to count. There’s so much stuff that’s been released this year that I didn’t get to, so if there are obvious omissions that’s the reason why.

  1. Ashmaze Azavana - 回想録 + 0=

So Ashmaze kicked their vocalist to the curb, yoinked the vocalist from VIRGE, and rebranded? I came to this party late so I have no horse in this race, but these two minis are really damn good. Even though these are all old songs, I’m excited to see where this unit goes from here. I’m also excited for their newly minted rival, Ga to Chou, but I’m going to need more than one track before I decide if I can hype them. I need to spend more time with this mini myself, but I’m happy enough with this to put it here.

  1. BAND-MAID - Epic Narratives

There’s something about BAND-MAID that I can’t get enough of. Kick ass metal musicians in French maid outfits? Sounds about as weird as your average visual kei band, but with 30% more focus. These girls rock. If you haven’t checked out BAND-MAID, do so! They got that crossover appeal in the visuals and the sound, and they’re one of the most popular rock acts for a reason!

  1. deadman - GENEALOGIE DER MORAL & LIVING HELL

deadman is back. Who could have expected that? I’m digging all of the revivals this decade is bringing us - we’re way closer in spirit to the boom than ever before. This album sounds as if deadman never stopped activities - it’s still bristling with melancholic energy. Maco sounds as good as ever. Classic Nagoya kei right here!

  1. Marvelous Cruelty - 素晴ラシキ残酷 + 素晴ラシキ残酷II

My guilty pleasure, now available in modern quality! I enjoy the antics of this band, even if my wallet does not appreciate their scattershot release strategy and audio gimmicks like azimuth drift, which are intended to evoke feelings of listening to demos from 1999. These two albums are intended to evoke feelings of listening to completed songs from 2024. If you need a place to start with MC - and they’re an overwhelming band to get into - this is the spot.

  1. NAZARE - 荊海-RE:BIBLE-

One of the more impossible releases to source this year, this is mostly retakes with one new track added at the end. But the retakes are good. I think both versions of a vain you are excellent, Blink was definitely elevated, Adolfism 6 is exactly what I expect, and unknown -Unplugged- was the biggest surprise! NAZARE does bossa nova quite well!

  1. Sadie - The Revival of Sadness

Welcome back Sadie. The THIRTEEN are cool but they don’t hit the same vibes that Sadie hit. And what better way to welcome back one of the most legendary indie loud-kei bands than with a re-recording of a ton of their best hits??? This album is solid from beginning to end, and a lot of the elements added to new tracks are tastefully done. The mix and master is also the best it’s ever been.

  1. 椎名林檎 - 放生会

I can’t get enough of this album. Shiina Ringo can do no wrong to me, but even then this album is next level. So many features across each track on the album, and I’m loving the energy that these collaborations bring to the release as a whole. Definitely feels more fresh and energizing than her last few albums. Plus, over half the songs on the album have music videos! You can watch this as much as you can listen!

Like I said, I have a large backlog. I may add more later.

I’m just going to pick three specific MVs that really made an impression.

PSYCHIC FEVER - BEE-PO

PSYCHIC FEVER was my big discovery this year. I like boybands, and I’ve always kind of wanted to like an LDH group. I thought I was getting close a few times, but none ever clicked enough for me to go beyond watching a few MVs. Then PSYCHIC FEVER released an EP featuring songs produced by JP THE WAVY this year with a sort of nostalgic hip-hop concept, and I got interested enough to look into their other stuff.

Just Like Dat feat. JP THE WAVY is their big hit, and I love that song too, but it was this video of them dancing around to BEE-PO in Thailand that really sold me on them. It just looks really natural, and you can tell that the members connect well with the music and have great chemistry together.

Lisa lil vinci - kung fu

This year has been super stressful, so I think I’ve been seeking out mellower music than usual. I find Lisa lil vinci’s songs really easy to listen to on repeat.

I like the lyrics to this song in particular because it’s not just him bragging that things are going well, it’s also about day to day life when you’re trying to stay focused on inching your way towards a big goal. I’ve been kind of in a similar state this year where I feel like I’m on the right track but I need to keep chipping away at things each day, so it struck a chord.

BMSG MARINE - Memoria

This has basically my dream BMSG line-up: LEO from BE:FIRST, TAKUTO from MAZZEL, Aile The Shota and edhiii boi. If it had SOTA from BE:FIRST as well, it’d have every single one of my favourite guys from the company. TAKUTO also sings quite a bit, which is rare for him, and he gets a dance solo, so this almost feels targeted.

It’s a pretty song and Shota used the roughness of edhiii boi’s voice really well. It feels really refreshing every time he comes in.

Slowly going through this thread and already found some incredible new artists, thank you all for taking your time to do these write-ups

5: cali≠gari - 17: The 'gari boys didn’t disappoint this year either. I feel like this album is slightly more memorable than the previous, and I already thought the previous was better than the one before, so the trajectory is promising. They’ve matured but also kept their silliness where appropriate, and they can still surprise with new sounds.

4: BUCK-TICK - スブロサ SUBROSA: One of the big surprises of the year. Honestly, even though I was optimistic and had faith in the band, there was a little bit of doubt lurking in the back whether they can pull it off… but they came through with one of their freshest and most daring albums ever! After more than 20 albums, close to 40 years of activity. I wish to be this creative when I get to their age. Amazing stuff.

3: deadman - Genealogie der Moral: If you had told me many years ago that I’d be listening to new music from these guys my mind would have been blown (and it still is!). Did not lose a single beat, picks up right where they left off. Which is to say not the rawest dirtiest deadman tunes, more melodic and melancholic but that’s always been their biggest strength to me. They even squeezed in some nods and references, very nice. Beautiful, cool, dark, deadman.

2: MUNIMUNI - THE MOONLIGHT PARTY: Maaaan, they sure take their time releasing new music but when they do it hits each and every time. Still one of the most special and amusing underground bands, somehow keeping the flag of old-school vk alive while also heavily dipping into the classic gothic tradition (but then again, didn’t the best of the old vk scene also do that?). I seriously hope I won’t have to wait years for the next life sign from them…

1: 色々な十字架 - 1年生や2年生の挨拶: It really says something about the current state of vk (or rather my tastes vis-à-vis the current scene) that my favorite album of the year comes from a band that started as a spoof/joke project, and it still is I guess. Even if most of the lyrical humor goes over my head, there’s no denying the chops these guys possess, and the palpable genuine respect and love for old-school melodic vk. One of those rare albums where I feel like “yep, this one’s made for me alright.”

Honorable mentions:

  • CHAQLA. - CHAQLA.
  • kein - PARADOXON DOLORIS
  • ルインフィア - 刻音

it might seem silly to say, but i must!
your description of subrosa made me tear up a bit. i have been surrounded by many a people that just dog on anything they’ve done post-sakurai, and it’s quite tiring. i am happy we agree on this beautiful album <3

My favorite albums:

  1. eleanor - Effigy Of The Flowing Tears

Found this band while I was looking for Japanese gothic metal bands that are not VK, and they have exactly the sound and vibe I was looking for. I love the combination of heaviness and the melancholic atmosphere. Highlight: insomnia, Alone in the dark

  1. DazzlingBAD〜呪縛憑霊project〜 - 呪縛憑霊 (Jubaku Hyourei)

I didn’t expect this band to do a wafuu side project, but it ended up awesome. I always liked them, but this release might be my favorite one from them so far. Highlight: 花一匁 (Hana ichi-monme), 地蔵首かぞえうた (Jizō kubi kazoe uta)

  1. Deathpair – despair

Discovering Zeile, taking a liking to them, learning of their disbandment, then learning that they reformed under a new name has been a real rollercoaster, but I’m glad they’re back. Highlight: Bondage

  1. FORBIDDEN - TWELVE-SIX

Been following ex-Lilith guitarist Lin’s work for a while, and was happy to see he could actually start a band this time, with the singer of Screw. Love the electro-heavy sound. Highlight: Underworld

  1. David - Ⅵ Prophecy

Technically this came out last december, but got a digital release this year, and I listened to it a lot. I love Sui’s work, and he delivers on this release too. Also the album art is peak. Highlight: Hope

Honorable mentions:

NETH PRIERE CAIN - 潜ム闇、迫リ来ル狂気 (Sen mu yami, Sako Ri rai ru kyōki)
They’re just consistently good, both the music and the looks too.
(Highlight: 跡 (Ato))

GrimAqua – AQUAISM
I guess they’re called ORSEAS now. Anyway, just some nice art-kei that caught my attention this year.
(Highlight: 黄昏オフィリア)

Unholy Orpheus - what is DEATH?
Shiren’s vocal wouldn’t be enough to carry an album, but the music is so good it makes up for it.
(Highlight: ARTROID FEELINGS)

DEZERT - The Heart Tree
I said this album won’t end up on an album of the year list, but I listened to it a lot, so it deserves a mention. There are maybe 2-3 duds on it, the rest is good.
(Highlight: 君の脊髄が踊る頃に (Kimino sekizuiga odorukoroni))

My favorite singles:

  1. のろゐみこ (Noroimico) - 春爛漫 (Haruranman)

This band remains one of my favorites. Only released singles this year, any only this one got an MV. Bonus points for the nice album art.

  1. Uz:ME - ALPINA

I knew about batAAr, but I didn’t follow the band members after they disbanded, and pretty much forgot about them. Imagine my surprise when I learned that the guitarists started a band in Japan, with a japanese singer/voice actor, and not only that, it’s actually good…? It kind of alternates between pop and rock, but most of their stuff is fun listen. This single in particular is an absolute banger. This is probably the biggest surprise for me this year, certainly didn’t expect to run into the batAAr guys…

  1. Rides in Revellion – パーフェクト・ブルー (Perfect Blue)

I fell asleep on this band a while ago, but checked this single out on a whim, and it’s amazing. Every single song is great. I just decided to check out the rest of their discography when I learned that they’re disbanding. sigh

  1. 甘い断頭台 (Amai Dantoudai) - 不滅の花 (Fumetsu no Hana)

This band caught my attention last year, but they only released three singles in two years so far. I hope for more, because they’re amazing, both the music and outfits are lovely.

  1. リリカ (Lyrica) - 「ストロベリィマァマレィド」(Strawberry Marmalade)

This band is a bit hit and miss, but this single just clicked with me. Been listening to it on repeat. Singer’s outfit is cool too.

Honorable mentions:

凛-Lin -「森羅万象-Birth of Creation-」
I like Lin’s solo work, but this one stood out to me with the visuals. That red outfit looks like something out of a chinese fantasy game, pretty much my favorite look this year.

DAMNED - STAIN
Another one to my “I’m not into metalcore, but…” list, I ended up listening to this a lot, and will certainly check out their releases.

DazzlingBAD - antagonism
Yeah, this band is still cool.

トリカブト (Torikabuto) - 『紋白蝶』
I was hoping for Watanuki Miyuki to start a band or project, I love his style, and this one’s really promising.

【花冷え。】(Hanabie.) - いとをかしMyType
They keep releasing good songs, and this one was my favorite. I also loved the wafuu inspired outfits.

David - Harness
I wish this guy released more stuff digitally, but I’ll take what I can get.

After going through two albums once more to finally pick some songs I can post my list (or whatever it is).

The order by numbers doesn’t mean anything but I guess it’ll help identifying the switches from one band to the next.

Let’s start easy with mini albums, there’s just one.

Luv PARADE - JOKER

It definitely gives me some Despa vibes even though it still doesn’t exactly sound like them (which it shouldn’t anyway). But that’s why it’s not surprising I liked it right away.

Picks:

“INTO THE FLAMES”

“MIDNIGHT SUN”

It’s just my most favorite songs from the mini that’s why. More a matter of taste than anything I easily could explain.

Next are singles.

  1. DIVIM - Dictator

This single immediately had me, all three songs but especially the title song and I loved it all year through, even still by the end of the year (or right now while typing and listening to it from copying the link). I love how you can keep on sticking with clapping the rhythm from the beginning without interrupting throughout the whole song and no matter how often the rhythm changes it always gets back to the one from the beginning. I also love these changes.
It was the first single I knew I’d put on my list.

  1. キズ - 鬼 (Kizu - Oni)

A bit similar than with the previous one, and I’m so glad, that “Bee-autiful days” got released in 2023 so I didn’t have to decide between both.
I loved the song right from the very first listen and still love when it comes up in my mixed playlists (that partly consist of more than 600 songs).
So it was clear, this would be part of my favorite songs for 2024.

  1. 黒曜日 (Kuroyoubi) - Infinite Echoes

I fell for that band with that song. I actually knew them before and there are so many great songs. But this one holds the heavyness partly in how the song is written and played but especially regarding the mood. Combined with a few more things I can’t put into words. It just clicked right away, perfectly meeting my taste. I especially love how it works up from 1:50 into the chorus.

  1. CHAOSS - FACE TO FACE

That’s a song that got released just recently but out of what I’ve been trying out or re-checking for this thread it made its way here. Still curious what’s to come in the future.

  1. sugar - Cacao92%

Right at the beginning I wasn’t sure but around 0:50 as soon as the song goes on it clicked. It’s not too surprising with me liking キズ (Kizu) a lot and the similarities especially with this song. Since this band is just new on the market it’s again just about waiting and seeing.

Then it’s about albums.

  1. NUL. - AVA

That was the first album coming up my mind when thinking about the best of. They delivered as usual. I picked my two favorite songs.

“Gravity”

“THE LAST DAY”

  1. XANVALA - BANQUET

I never listened much to that band but I really immediately liked the album. So in the end it made it here. One of my picks was clear because I loved it right from the beginning, for the other I just listened to everything once again before I started typing (after doing so yesterday already). Picking was so hard.

“ジャバラ” (JABARA) was the easy pick.

The second one turns out to be “クロコダイル” (crocodile).

  1. ν[NEU] - N.ever

I hadn’t expected to put this band here but I had to.
Out of the songs on that album I only listened to two when they got released. I might have missed one because I didn’t pay too much attention at some point.
What’s different on that best of is Mitsu’s voice. I got to know it before he joined ν[NEU] and I always missed it a bit. So finding this back in these re-recordings was something I had not expected to experience in 2024. But let’s get to my picks. I leave out “PULSE” even though I love it a lot as well.

First one is “LIMIT” which I also immediately loved in 2010 or when it got released back then (I’m curious how “想” (Sou) would sound now which’s my most favorite song but since I’m always very tense about re-recordings it’s also fine they didn’t put it on the album).

The one I might have missed in the past and therefore surprised me now is “APOLLON”.

  1. Deathpair - Despair

Alright, they renamed from Zeile but I don’t know, if I ever tried them out before (was there anything, I don’t remember). But when “BONDAGE” got posted, yeah, I immediately loved it. Not posting it now because it already got posted by someone else before.
That’s the other album I had to go through yesterday and today again to finally pick two songs.
I was close to even pick “2405101830” because I like the title but also it’s like two and a half minutes long but then it’s just an SE so I didn’t.

One pick is “R.I.P.”, I love the guitar at the beginning and also so much more, the low singing in the beginning, followed by the talking and yeah. Not to mention the bass drum. xDD

The other one is “増悪” (Zouaku). Again the bass drum but also the toms in the beginning are part of the why. Aside from this I just like the song.

  1. 黒曜日 (Kuroyoubi) - UGLY BORDER

I’m glad they released the singles from this year on a physical album in December so I can list more of their songs here. I wouldn’t have decided on another song for the singles though but didn’t want to post more than one for variety reasons.
So here’s two more of their songs because I just listened to them so much this year and really love their songs.

“忘却と深淵のドレス” (Boukyaku to shinen no DORESU) is definitely a song easily matching my taste. A bit of a heavier mood (I’m just not a positive type) is a good first step.

“言霊” (Kotodama) is such a beautiful ballad with very wonderful lyrics (all their lyrics are and those I took a closer look at aren’t very positive as well).

Honorable mentions:

First one is a another song by 黒曜日 (Kuroyoubi) that didn’t get released in 2024. Beside me listening to their music a lot, it’s been especially “Gravity” that stuck in my head so much while I was planning a fanfic for a Halloween collaboration that I used quite some themes from the lyrics for the plot after just starting out with the costume for one of the characters and that turned the thing into a song fic.

The other one is a song by the GazettE.
Those who know me for a while know it’s my most favorite band. And with everything happening in 2024 listening to them was tough. But since I’ve been through not doing so with another band years ago and it took me months and still lots of pain when I started listening to them again I decided to not wait at all. I gave two or three days with not listening to music at all and then just played the mixed playlists. So there was lots of other music as well but a significant part of the songs is by the GazettE though. I also let it just play while doing other things so sometimes I didn’t realize them playing too much, sometimes I still did.

This also happened for “ABHOR GOD”.
Back when the album came out in 2018 I immediately mainly had Reita on my mind for the chorus, shouting “TOO FAST TO LIVE, TOO YOUNG TO DIE” and that’s what made the song very tough to listen to but also it’s the reason why I want to put it here right now.

Everything I would’ve mentioned was already on Jigsaw’s list, so I won’t go too deep into any of them. I mostly wasn’t enthused with J-music I heard this year, but SUBROSA was easily #1, with the Kein, Deadman, and Cali Gari efforts following. I like all of these albums, and I may even love SUBROSA eventually, but for now I mostly just want to single out my, uh, single of the year from Japan.

Heaven in Her Arms casually dropped what could be their best song at the beginning of last year, and I haven’t heard anything since. Shame, because this is an incredible cut of melancholic blackened screamo. They are actually primed to take the crown from Envy at this time. Special shout-out for the inclusion PG2 from the J-hxc band ENSLAVE (please please please check out their album Far East Hardcore Punk); and for Rike JEEP King, the second ENSLAVE vocalist for whom this song was composed following his passing. If PG2 just joined up with HIHA for their next album, I would lose my shit. This collaboration is dynamite, she sounds great with the group.

oh, the envy and toe albums are decently enjoyable as well - but that’s mostly it.

Edit: I’m a fucking idiot lmao

Japanese 2024 AOTY for me. The most enthused I’ve been with a Galneryus release since 2015, they fucking Did It on this album. Every other JP LP from this year cowered before this one for me - and then I completely forgot to mention it. Sorry Galneryus!!!
