Dear All,
LUNA SEA’s irreplaceable drummer, Shinya, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2026, at 6:16 PM.
Diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in 2020 and then a brain tumor last year, he underwent seven surgeries and continued treatment, but his life ended at age 56.
He was striving to play drums at the March live show through relentless rehabilitation, when his condition suddenly deteriorated, leading to his far too early departure.
During his life, Mayu fought his illness with an unwavering determination to return to the stage with all five members, stronger than anyone else.
His indomitable spirit and his sun-like smile, which never faded until the very end, were a beacon of hope for us members and all the staff.
The soulful beats he carved out over more than 35 years, and his profound love for music, will never cease to resonate within LUNA SEA’s story.
We express our deepest gratitude to all the fans who warmly supported Mayu throughout his life.
Per the wishes of his family, the funeral service was held privately with only close relatives present.
We plan to arrange a separate occasion in the future where fans can gather to pay their respects.
Details will be announced as soon as they are finalized. For now, we humbly ask that you join us, the members, in praying for the peaceful rest of Shinya’s soul.

This really hits hard as someone who watched Luna Sea’s 2007 DVD last year… RIP 
Rest in peace Shinya. A huge loss. To say that he and his bandmates in luna sea inspired generations is an understatement. Everything we know and love about visual kei can be traced back to them.
You’ll be missed.

It was just a matter of time, but wow this news hits so hard. Besides that he was a fantastic and unique drummer he was such a kind and wholesome person. Glad that I witnessed him one last time at the Lunatic fest - it was such a heartwarming Moment.
