apologies if this wasn’t something you were looking to have responded to but…
melodyne has a slight compressing effect, so if the loudness/strength of a note jumps up a bit compared to the ones around it, that’s kinda a signature of melodyne / similar soft-tuners. especially so if you can hear the dynamics of a singer but then suddenly they’re flattened out and boosted. there’s also sometimes a more perceptible ‘sparkle’ (high harmonics converging from disorder) that sounds metallic w/ a bad engineer, or gets covered to be unnoticable by an engineer who’s more skilled.
ofc as a guitarist, i don’t judge a singer for using melodyne/autotune any more than i’d judge a guitarist for hitting a compression pedal; it’s just a new sound and a way to control how u sit in the mix.
at this point in my life & vkei fandom, i think the ‘best’ singers are those who anticipate how the mix will work with the performance they give them, and give the performance best attuned to being well mixed.
no it’s actually interesting - he doesn’t have any standing out shifts in tone in that case, but some songs sound way different from how he would perform them live just a few years ago.
there’s a large snippet of the last song in the mass concert preview on their youtube closer to the end that almost sounds like it’s somebody with a different own vocal register covering it compared to how it sounded in studio, so I guess he just sings it that way now.
I think any musician simply gets better over time or their style slowly changes which may not even be a conscious effort to do so. Also got to consider as we age our bodies do change so got to do what you gotta do to accomodate these things. His voice changing a bit over time isnt really surprising.
I’ve seen someone pointing out that you get more longevity out of your voice if you develop control and practice moderation over pushing for the most perfect/demanding/outstanding and never been heard technique, so the repeated touring strain and life things like smoking or respiratory infections do less cumulative damage over the years.
I think judging by kyo sounding like two different people when he goes avantgardè in Deg and very often misses the studio mark VS when he goes back to singing in simpler and less fancy style of their first ~10 years as a band, this idea has merit.
You’re absolutely right, especially about unclean vocals. Yes, when it comes to screaming/shouting, no matter how well we do it, there will always be damage to the voice. Over the years, we need and must to make it sound a bit different, a bit deeper, and most important, to work on it, in order to keep it in good condition.
About Ruki, he always been a great singer, which is why he managed to keep his voice in great shape. But the dude is +40 yo with some twenty years of touring behind him, ofc he sounds different and will continue to. He’s still an amazing vocalist with a great control over his voice.
Totally agree with the above two posts. Actually did think of Kyo when posting the previous message as his voice has changed way more noticably over the years than Ruki.
I personally like his look in the no. 666 Mv it’s so cool, but the ruder Mv outfit is cool too! I love the hair! But Yknow his moderen look is cool too, like the mass album look! Oh but also the ninth album look was cool, I love the purple suit! Ruki has such good fashion sense! I wiiiiish I had his clothes !
Well, I guess it pretty much indefinitely delayed. They never announced a release date, nor really talked anything about the 2024 release afeter that december teaser. For sure Reita’s death completely derailed everything that was planned, but we actually don’t know how far they were in the recording process
I don’t know, it can drop next month, it can drop next year, it could not drop at all. We gonna have to wait till they decide to announce anything
it never had a set release date, but their past two albums and their release trajectory were just discussed a bit earlier in this thread, and we had no other updates from the band coming in since.
Both things you said are true, either way with the year these guys have had I don’t care if they acknowledge it or not, I want them to take care of themselves most of all!
I actually spoke to someone at JPU Records about this years ago, as I asked them if they’d ever release their indies material, and if I recall correctly they said getting the rights to their indies material is difficult, so I wouldn’t bank on the indies stuff getting a digital/streaming release I’m afraid
they released an indie-best of CD sometime during their PS Company run though?.. so they either own the rights to that, or Tomomi does, and she still manages the band.
